Founded in 1895 as Peiyang University, Tianjin University is the oldest institute of higher education in China, and pioneered the development of modern Chinese education.
Tianjin University sports venues contain the Stadium, The The Old Gymnasium, The Swimming Center, and The New Gymnasium on Weijin Road Campus, as well as the Qiushi Assembly Hall, The Sports Complex, and the Datong Student Center on Peiyang Park Campus.
Introduction of Tianjin University sports venues on Weijin Road Campus
1. Stadium
Tianjin University stadium covers an area of 87,077 square meters. It was completed and put into use in October 2002. Two standard track and fields were connected, with the total area of 36500 square meters. The west field and football field opened after repair in September 2015. West field has nine 400m runways, ten 100m tracks, the football field was covered by 50mm imported mixed artificial grass and the supplementary motor area was covered by 25mm artificial straight grass.
The stadium contains 24 standard basketball courts, including four polyurethane plastic courts, fifteen hard acrylic venues, two standard lighted courts, with the remaining courts all being installed with lights for extracurricular activities in the evening. The stadium also contains ten volleyball fields, thirteen tennis courts (including eight light and plastic fields, and six standard hard courts), one thick polyurethane plastic playground, and one tennis wall fifty meters in length.
Tianjin University Mental Quality Development Base stands in the northeast corner of the stadium, covering an area of about 2,000 square meters. It carries out more than one hundred training projects in high, middle and low heights.
2. The Old Gymnasium
The old gymnasium of Tianjin University was built in 1958. It reopened after an extensive renovation in September 2013. The building is located to the west of Tailei Street on Weijin Road campus and next to the Youth Lake. With a total area of 1,123 square meters, the gymnasium is also near the swimming center and Feng Jicai Institute of Literature and Art. The gym is decorated with a solid wood floor and badminton glue, lighting, a sound system and air-conditioning. There is a set of basketball stands, one portable volleyball stand and four sets of badminton stands. Training, extracurricular activities and sports teaching of basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, sports dance, hip-hop, yoga, and taekwondo can be held inside the gym.
3. The Swimming Center
The Tianjin University Swimming Center was built in December 1998, and opened on July 10, 1999. The overall floorage is 3,621 square meters.
There is a deep pool and a wading pool inside the swimming center. The deep pool is of classic standard with a length of 50 meters, breadth of 25 meters, and the depth of water is 1.7 - 2.0 meters. The wading pool is of irregular standard, being 25 meters long, 5.1 - 8.4 meters wide and 1.2 - 1.3 meters deep.
The water in each pool is filtrated circularly every day. The male and female changing rooms are equipped with 450 changing boxes of stainless steel which is lower than normal maximum capacity of 500 people. There are 67 shower nozzles overall in the male and female changing rooms.
4. The New Gymnasium
The new gymnasium of Tianjin University was home to the women’s basketball games during the 9th University Games of the People’s Republic of China. The new gymnasium is located in Weijin Road Campus of Tianjin University, No. 92 Weijin Street, Nankai District. Right next to Weijin Street and Anshan West Avenue, the gymnasium occupies an excellent position. The stadium has a floor area of 19,620 square meters and the area of the structure is 13,835 square meters. The gym was designed by the Research Institute of Architecture Design & Urban Planning, with the construction costing 110 million RMB.
There are 3,800 fixed seats and 904 portable seats inside the gym. Beside the function of undertaking large-scale conferences, artistic performances, sports teaching, sporting events and other activities, the gym can also undertake high-grade basketball, volleyball, ping-pong, handball and other international large ball games. The stadium is also equipped with a ground source heat pump, central air conditioning, a television relay system, multifunctional lighting systems, and mobile wireless coverage.
At present, the stadium possesses 18 plastic badminton courts, 17 ping-pong tables and 17 billiards tables. Students can play badminton, table tennis, tai chi and other sports activities and have their fitness tests in the stadium.
A brief introduction to the stadiums On Peiyang Park Campus
1. Qiushi Assembly Hall
Lying in the front of Peiyang Campus of Tianjin University on the east side of the east-west central axis, Qiushi Assembly Hall holds an essential position as the first set of buildings when entering through the main East gate, and is known as the main structure of Peiyang Campus. Designed by Cui Kai, a well-known architect and designer who is also an alumnus of Tianjin University, the whole building uses shale bricks as the main material and conforms to the design style of the other buildings, which is not only an inheritance of the elder campus of Tianjin University, but a significant part of the unification of the design style of the whole campus. The building used fair-faced concrete as another essential building material, compared with the shale bricks, highlights the design details.
Qiushi Assembly Hall stands in the southern part of the central square memorial pavilion and is the most important of the main buildings. It is crafted in the shape of a quarter arc. The assembly hall is five floors high, possesses over 1700 seats, an arena of two hundred square meters, an integrated set of lighting, sound, and mechanical equipment, as well as a fifty square meters LED display screen. The wall of the assembly hall is decorated by thousands of sunken wall lamps, which are aesthetically pleasing and utilise acoustic theory to improve the assembly hall further.
Qiushi Assembly Hall has received dozens of provincial level officials, and held dozens of large-scale performances such as flower rain on the Silk Road and the national symphony orchestra since it was put into use in September 2015. The assembly hall provides a stage to expand students’ horizons and exhibit their artistic creations.
Qiushi Assembly Hall is also equipped with a medium-sized conference room that can hold three hundred people, several small conference rooms and several VIP rooms in order to meet the needs of different meetings and events.
2. The Sports Complex
The Sports Complex is located in the northeast of Tianjin University Peiyang Park Campus, and adjacent to the young teachers' apartments and the administration building. Li Xinggang, an alumnus of Tianjin University and famous architectural design master in China, directed the design of this building. The Sports Complex is one of Tianjin University Peiyang Park Campus landmarks. The Sports Complex, which covers an area of 66,945 square meters, is composed of three parts, the gymnasium, the swimming pool and the stadium. It combines all kinds of ball games, track and field, swimming and body building.
The Sports Complex implements the campus planning and design guidelines, combines with the sports field layout and landscape design, and integrates architectural space design into campus space. It emphasizes the concept of a "Sports Complex". In addition to satisfying teachers' and students' daily physical education and activities, it embodies humanism and multi-level design. All of these provide a variety of conditions for teachers' and students' sports, and have led to it becoming a great carrier of teaching and extracurricular life. It was also designed to be an energy-saving complex. All buildings uses high side window lighting, which makes use of natural light as far as possible, and it also utilizes natural ventilation fully, so as to save the operating costs and its carbon footprint.
The gymnasium is divided into three floors. On the first floor, on the west side from south to north are the lecture hall, taekwondo hall, gymnastic hall, martial arts hall, table tennis hall and dance studio. In the east is the service space, including bathroom, shower room and physical testing center, etc. The sandwich layer located in the east of the gymnasium, which is the sports department teacher's office. The second floor is the main sports venue, located in the west side of the gymnasium, from south to north, followed by the basketball hall, the badminton hall, the tennis hall and the volleyball hall. Moreover, the east side of the second floor is a fifty meter indoor running gallery.
The first floor of the natatorium is mainly comprised of the locker room and a 50 meter standard swimming pool, while the second floor is mainly for educational research.
The purpose of the stadium is for outdoor sports. It contains one standard 400-meter track field and a football pitch, twelve basketball courts, six tennis courts, five volleyball courts, a badminton court and a ground with exercising equipments.
The Sports Complex carries the huge fitness demands of teachers and students in Tianjin University Peiyang Park Campus. The Sports Complex is open from 7:00 am to 10:30 pm. In the Sports Complex, staff and students may have physical training. These provide a strong guarantee for teachers and students who wish to shape a strong body.
The Sports Complex also undertakes large conferences and exhibitions. On April 22, 2016, Tianjin University’s 20th session equipment exhibition was successfully held here.
3. Datong Student Center
Datong student center, the main place for students to meet in Peiyang Park Campus, organizing activities and gathering, is located in the far west end of the main axis of the Peiyang Park Campus, and is often crowded. There is a high usage requirement for function intensive, quality of management, fire safety and collection, evacuation of persons etc. The main functions of Datong Student Center are organizing activities such as campus cultural events, student affairs management, student community activities, undertaking large-scale competitions and conferences, etc. It is a building complex that contains students' art, science and technology, culture and community activities, and student affairs management.
The building is composed of A, B, and C areas, with a total construction area of 10,145 square meters. It makes use of static and dynamic separation: C is the office area. The first floor is the employment guidance center. On the second floor is the mental health education center. The third floor is the funding center, student affairs hall and Youth League Committee Office. The first floor of area B is a lecture hall that can accommodate more than 450 people. The lecture hall with locker rooms and standby equipment, can hold a variety of activities when arranged through the School or College Students Association. At present the lecture hall's frequency of use is very high, and almost every day there are student activities. Next to the lecture hall is Tianjin University Peiyang Art Troupe's rehearsal studio. The second floor contains many types of piano room and rehearsal studios. The first floor of area A is the students' business base and the exhibition hall, and there is a flexible partition between the meeting room and the VIP room. The second floor is the Art Education Center Office, while the third floor holds the student community activity room and office.
In addition, the Tianjin University film theater will be built in the Datong Student Center, and then teachers and students of Peiyang Park Campus will be able to watch the latest blockbusters in 3D to meet the demand on campus.
