Professor Zhang Guofan

 

Zhang Guofan, born in Anlu Cunty, Hubei Province, was a physicist, an expert on mechanics, an educator and 1st-Class Professor in China. Dr. Zhang received his Bachelor’s Degree from Shanghai Lujiang College in 1930, his M. S. from Cornell University, USA, in 1933, and earned his Ph. D. from the University of Iowa, USA, in 1935. Dr. Zhang devoted his life to higher education in China. After returning to China in 1935, he assumed his professorship in several colleges and universities, such as Peiyang University, Northwest Engineering College, Lujiang College and Lingnan University, serving as the Dean of the Physics Department at Peiyang University, Dean of Aeronautics Department of Northwest Engineering College, Dean of Academic Affairs Office and Vice-President of Tianjin University, respectively. He taught courses on Theoretical Mechanics, Optics, Fluid Mechanics, Aerodynamics, Flight Mechanics, Vibration Mechanics, etc. Dr. Zhang Guofan’s academic achievements fall into two categories: research in Molecular Physics and Atomic Physics, and the theory of turbulence in the 1930s. He published 2 papers in 1936: Calculate the Atomic Radius with Compression Coefficient and Expansion Coefficient, Calculate the Molecular Radius with Compression Coefficient and Expansion Coefficient. His State Equation of Fluid and Solid which was put forward in 1930, with the two papers, had a great impact in the international academic field. In 1950, Dr. Zhang was appointed as the Director of Tianjin Education Bureau, and the Vice Mayor of Tianjin in 1956. He was elected as the Deputy to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th session of the NPC, the Vice-Director of the 4th session of CPPCC Tianjin, the Member of China Democratic League Central Committee, and the Director of China Democratic League Tianjin Committee.
