Research on Osteoporosis Published in JAMA

 Research

Recently, a research team from Tianjin Hospital, Tianjin University, led by Zhao Jiaguo and Zeng Xiantie, published a paper, the “Association Between Calcium or Vitamin D Supplementation and Fracture Incidence in Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A systematic Review and Meta-analysis” in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) (IF=44.405). The research results were also released simultaneously by numerous mainstream international media such as the ABC, Reuters, the New York Times, the Washington Post and The Independent.

Supplements of calcium/vitamin D have always been considered a basic intervention for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis Associations at home and abroad suggest older adults should supplement calcium/vitamin D to increase their bone density and reduce the occurrence of osteoporotic fracture. However, after analyzing over 50,000 big data, Zhao Jiaguo and Zeng Xiantie’s team pointed out that calcium supplements, whether vitamin D, or calcium / vitamin D do not reduce the incidence of fractures in community-dwelling older adults over 50 years old. On the contrary, large doses of vitamin D add to the risk of fracture. In conclusion, it recommended that extra calcium/vitamin D should not be routinely supplemented to those people.

It is the first paper in the orthopedics field in China that has been published in JAMA. Tianjin Hospital, Tianjin University is the first author and the only corresponding author of the paper.

The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) was founded in 1883. It is one of the most influential medical journals, the latest Impact Factor (IF) being 44.405, 7 points higher than Science, and 4 points higher than Nature. The Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), the Lancet, and the British Medical Journal (BMJ) are known as the world’s top four and most authoritative medicine journals. The JAMA receives about 5,000 high quality papers globally every year, only about 190 papers are published, and the acceptance rate is only about 4%.

Tianjin Hospital, Tianjin University’s paper is of great significance to the development of more targeted research on osteoporosis prevention and treatment.

A comprehensive cooperation agreement was signed between Tianjin University and Tianjin Hospital in July 2, 2017 which opened up a new chapter of cooperation between Tianjin University and hospitals as well as between medicine and engineering at Tianjin University. It also marked TJU’s medical research as entering a new phase. Tianjin University and Tianjin Hospital will spare no effort to improve the comprehensive strength of Tianjin medical education and the international competitiveness of clinical research, further promote the construction of a world-class university with Chinese characteristics, expand the disciplinary system of Medical Science in Tianjin and strengthen the transformation of medical engineering. The two sides will strive to establish a comprehensive and long-time partnership in the fields of science and technology, education, training of talent and the development of science and technology.
