President Jin Donghan Enhances Academic Collaboration in Singapore and Malaysia

President Jin Donghan led a delegation On September 17-21 to explore prestigious universities and institutions in Singapore and Malaysia, namely Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), Institution of Engineers Singapore (IES), Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), University of Malaya (UM), and JCET Singapore.

During the visit, there was a lecture featuring Mr. Tan Seng Chuan, the President-elect of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), and Mr. Chuan Hean Terik, former President of the Federation of Engineering Organizations of the Asia-Pacific (FEIAP), aiming to foster global collaboration in engineering education.

While at SUTD, Vice President Dai Lixiang emphasized SUTD’s significant value on strategic collaboration with Tianjin University (TJU), and expressed a desire for these universities to enhance their mutual involvement in educational and scientific endeavors related to sustainable development.

It was mutually decided that engineering training ought to be centered on industrial development, offering both practical experiences and job opportunities to collaboratively enhance student’s pragmatic skills and creativity. The Sino-Singapore Eco-city was instrumental in collectively enhancing engineering education and entrepreneurship education.

On the trip to Singapore, Er. Tan Seng Chuan, President-elect of the WFEO and President Emeritus of the IES, alongside Er. Chong Kee Sen, President Emeritus of the IES and its representative to the FEIAP, met with the delegation. President Er. Tan Seng Chuan pointed out that WFEO would focus on its co-ordination with environmental protection, economy, and social progress.

President Jin briefly introduced the importance and implementation of developing emerging engineering disciplines at TJU. The dialogue between the parties involved TJU’s involvement in WFEO’s initiatives on World Engineering Day, aimed at collaboratively enhancing engineering education and boosting the skills of engineers.

Also, Jin headed his team to visit JCET Singapore, encountering their Chief Executive Officer Zheng Li. Zheng pointed out that his company focuses on semiconductor packaging and testing technology research and development and innovation. With many core patents, the company can significantly improve the performance and reliability of products and meet the market demand for high-performance and high-integration semiconductor products.

Furthermore, Jin briefly introduced TJU’s history and recent achievements in academic construction, scientific research, international cooperation, and innovation education. He pointed out that TJU would promote cooperation with enterprises, hoping to carry out more in-depth joint training and cooperative scientific research with JCET in the fields of integrated circuits and semiconductor technology.

During the visit to Malaysia, Jin Donghan emphasized the cooperation with ASEAN universities. He expressed his hope that through the cooperation with FEIAP, the University would strengthen the cooperation in engineering education and practice in the Asia-Pacific region and the countries along the Belt and Road, to improve the quality of engineering education.

In addition, the two sides held talks about undergraduate 2+2 students programs in chemical engineering and other fields and specific issues such as curriculum, mutual recognition of credits, and sharing of teaching resources, and finally reached an intention of cooperation.

On September 19, Jin Donghan and his delegation met with Prof Ir. Dr. Jeffrey Chiang, President of the IEM, Ir. Yau Chau Fong, Vice-President, and Ir. Dr. Bernard Lim, Vice-President, etc.

Jin emphasized the role of engineers in developing and assessing engineering education standards, distributing educational resources, and enhancing education quality. He further noted that the engineering education can provide talents and intellectual support for engineers. This positive interaction would promote the professional development of engineers and advance engineering technology.

On his journey to UM, Jin Donghan met Prof. Dato' Seri Ir. Dr. Noor Azuan Abu Osman, the President of UM, and Prof. Dr. Yvonne Lim Ai Lian, the Associate Vice President. They warmly welcomed President Jin.

Dr Yvonne Lim Ai Lian, Associate Vice President, briefly introduced UM’s history, academic achievements, and wide range of international cooperation. Jin expressed his hope for deep cooperation with UM in the field of engineering, to cultivate outstanding talents with an international outlook and innovative spirit.
