【129th Anniversary】 Forging a New Path in Education to Strengthen the Nation

 Arts and Culture

Tianjin University, China’s first modern university in the history of higher education, celebrated its 129th anniversary on October 2nd. Over the past century, the university has made significant strides in strengthening the nation through education, both in spirit and in practice.

Upholding the Mission of Strengthening the Nation Through Education

Since its founding, Tianjin University has taken on the responsibility of promoting education to fortify the country. Numerous examples illustrate this mission. Nearly a century ago, Zhang Tailei gave his life during the Guangzhou Uprising of 1927, leaving behind a legacy of seeking enduring happiness for the Chinese people. Today, the Zhang Tailei Exhibition Room in Tianjin University Archives remains a focal point on campus. Zhao Tianlin, former president of Tianjin University, who coined the school motto “seeking truth from facts,” demonstrated unwavering commitment to his principles. Today, every president of Tianjin University recounts the story behind this motto during the "first lesson" of the academic year. Today, the university has sent more than 200 teams and 3,000 students to 28 provinces for summer practice programs.

The key questions in education remain: What kind of talents should we nurture? How should we nurture them? And for whom? "Ideological and political education is central to addressing these fundamental questions," stated Yang Xianjin, Party Secretary of Tianjin University.

Cultivating Outstanding Talent for National Rejuvenation

Throughout its history, Tianjin University has produced numerous outstanding talents for the nation. Wang Chonghui, who received China’s first university diploma, was one of the drafters of the UN Charter. Hou Debang, a pioneer of China’s chemical industry, broke the Western monopoly with his alkali production method. Mao Yisheng designed the Qiantang River Bridge, the first modern bridge in China.

Today, in its pursuit of a world-class education system, Tianjin University aims to cultivate 220 undergraduate teaching icons, groups, and brands within five years and foster stronger collaboration between industry, academia, and research institutions. Additionally, the university has revamped its talent cultivation system to better support young researchers. Over the past five years, it has attracted more than 800 outstanding young professionals from across the globe.

Providing Technological Support for National Strategies

From developing China’s first aircraft engine to designing the first cross-river bridge constructed by Chinese engineers, Tianjin University has significantly contributed to establishing China’s modern industrial system. The university has also made notable advancements in technology, from new battery electrolytes to the minimally invasive surgical robot "Miaoshou."

To further scientific and technological development, Tianjin University has launched three major programs: Qiming, Pandeng, and Zhuoluo, aimed at nurturing talent in fields like artificial intelligence, intelligent manufacturing, and biosafety. The university has made numerous breakthroughs and has partnered with local enterprises to promote new technologies and facilitate their application.

“This new era demands innovation and will be defined by innovators. China’s need for innovation has never been greater,” said Jin Donghan, President of Tianjin University.

Promoting Chinese Culture Globally and Enhancing International Engagement

Tianjin University is also accelerating efforts to enhance global cultural exchange and promote Chinese culture abroad. Zhang Yukun and his team from the School of Architecture have spent over 20 years exploring new dimensions in Great Wall studies. Professor Feng Jicai has established five field teaching bases on intangible heritage at the university. Meanwhile, the Peiyang Choir has won seven world-class gold medals on international stages.

Looking ahead, as Tianjin University steps into the future with 129 years of history behind it, it is poised to continue nurturing talents who will contribute to national rejuvenation and meet the needs of the country in this new era.
