Liu Jing, chair professor of the School of Earth System Science at Tianjin University, is president of the Tianjin University Women Professors Association, doctoral supervisor, and recipient of the National Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. She has become an outstanding representative of contemporary female scientific research workers with her outstanding academic achievements and selfless dedication.
Liu Jing is engaged in the research field of active tectonics and seismic hazards on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. She has carried out field observations in high-altitude and difficult areas for a long time. Combined with numerical simulation and chronological testing, she systematically studied the uplift process of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the disaster effects caused by it. Her study provides an important scientific basis for quantifying the Quaternary activity and seismic risk of active faults. Her research results not only enrich the theoretical treasury of earth science, but also provide strong scientific and technological support for the national earthquake prevention and disaster mitigation work. Up to now, Liu Jing has published more than 120 SCI papers, with a total of more than 8,500 citations, demonstrating her extensive influence and profound academic attainments in the international academic community.
On research, she said: "Fieldwork is not hard, we can always see different scenery in the eyes of others." She is a member of the China Earthquake Administration, working on the national earthquake situation and prediction of earthquake danger areas. She has won many awards such as the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Youth Science and Technology Award, the first prize of the Sichuan Science and Technology Progress Award, and the first prize of the China Earthquake Administration's Earthquake Prevention and Disaster Reduction Scientific and Technological Achievements.
On education, she is strict with herself, leads by example, and spends almost all of her time to research and education. She not only pays attention to cultivating students' professional knowledge, but also attaches more importance to cultivating students' sense of innovation and practical ability. Under her guidance, more than 40 doctoral and master's students and 5 postdoctoral fellows have grown into the backbone of science and technology in the earthquake field. Liu Jing teaches a graduate course "Tectonic Geomorphology" and an undergraduate course "Introduction to Geomorphology", and guides students to participate in national innovation projects. She also went to key middle schools in Tianjin and Henan to give lectures on popular science knowledge, and used various platforms to popularize earthquake knowledge and stimulate young people's interest in earth science. Her classes are lively and interesting, and she is loved by her students. Her guidance is nuanced and has benefited the students a lot.
In daily life, she cares about the working and living conditions of students. She often understands students' progress and difficulties through group meetings and discussions, and provides professional guidance and psychological support for students. Through cultivating students' sense of innovation on a daily basis, and adopting open and inclusive discussion-style guidance, she encourages graduate students to express their views and put forward suggestions. She actively participated in the donation of funds to set up the well-known truth-seeking and talent cultivation fund, urging students to "know and act without fault, seek truth and achieve ideals. As the president of the Association of Women Professors of Tianjin University, she actively organizes various activities to provide good services for the female professors, provides high-quality resources and development platforms, promotes the achievements of the female professors, and helps solve the problems in the work and life of the female professors.
Liu Jing also actively participates in social welfare activities, donating to the Project for pneumoconiosis farmers and the Nursing Charity Society. She maintains a healthy work-life balance, having successful careers and a fulfilling family life as well.
