For six years, Professor Wei Jianguo from Tianjin University has been working to advance artificial intelligence (AI) education on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, bridging the educational gap between China's east and west. From 2016 to 2022, Wei dedicated his efforts to Qinghai Minzu University, a remote institution in need of advanced technological programs.
Wei, a renowned professor in the School of Intelligence and Computing, answered the call to support Qinghai’s development, despite the region’s challenges. Over the years, he helped establish several firsts for the university: the only undergraduate programs in information security and artificial intelligence in Qinghai, the province's first cyberspace security master's program, and the first industrial robotics and cybersecurity laboratories. These initiatives represent significant milestones in the development of AI education in the area.
Prior to his arrival, Qinghai faced a shortage of AI talent. Wei’s approach focused on building programs that trained students to stay and work in the region, ensuring that the seeds of technological advancement would take root in the high-altitude province.
He also fostered research collaboration between Tianjin University and Qinghai Minzu University, strengthening interdisciplinary education and research. His contributions helped secure the approval of a national AI key laboratory in Qinghai and facilitated student training programs that brought students to Tianjin for practical experience.
In addition to AI development, Wei emphasized the need for Qinghai to develop unique research focuses, such as intelligent interaction with minority languages. His work on Tibetan and Chinese voice interaction technology gained international recognition and marked a breakthrough for Qinghai Minzu University's computer science department.
Despite the long commutes, Wei remained deeply engaged with his students, ensuring they received a well-rounded education. His hands-on teaching methods and dedication to student success helped inspire countless students, many of whom won national awards in various competitions.
For his efforts, Wei has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the title of "Outstanding Educator of Qinghai Province". Reflecting on his six years of service, Wei described them as the most fulfilling of his career, contributing to the growth of both the university and the region's technological capabilities.
Professor Wei’s contributions have not only transformed Qinghai Minzu University but also set a precedent for the development of higher education in western China, leaving an enduring impact on the future of AI education on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
