In a heartfelt moment during the 2024 orientation season, a special photograph was taken at Tianjin University’s School of Architecture. The image captures Gao Yichen, a new architecture student, standing beside a 1958 class graduation photo, in which her grandfather is featured.
This symbolic image marks the continuation of a family legacy deeply rooted in architecture and education at Tianjin University.
Gao Yichen’s grandfather first discovered his passion for architecture as a young boy fascinated by shadow puppetry. This early interest in art blossomed into a love for architecture during his high school years, where he excelled in a drafting course that required designing and building a house model. His enthusiasm led him to pursue a degree at Tianjin University’s prestigious School of Architecture.
Upon entering the university, he found himself lagging behind his peers in drawing skills. Determined to improve, he spent his free time practicing sketching in Tianjin. This dedication to his craft paid off, and to this day, he continues to draw, finding it a source of mental solace and creative expression. His perseverance and passion for learning have been a lifelong inspiration to his granddaughter, Gao Yichen.
Gao Yichen’s grandfather often reminisces about the profound impact his professors at Tianjin University had on him. He recalls how Professor Shen Tianxing’s clear and thorough teaching in architectural physics made complex concepts accessible, even without textbook references. He also fondly remembers the personalized guidance he received in architectural design classes, where instructors respected and nurtured each student's creativity.
This progressive teaching philosophy, which emphasized critical thinking and creativity, was ahead of its time and left a lasting impression on Gao Yichen’s grandfather. It instilled in him a lifelong love for learning and a deep respect for the architectural profession.
Growing up in a family of architects, Gao Yichen was naturally drawn to architecture. Surrounded by architectural books and frequent visits to famous buildings, she developed a deep appreciation for the field. Influenced by her grandfather’s and parents’ passion, she chose to follow in their footsteps by enrolling in Tianjin University’s School of Architecture.
Gao Yichen is determined to approach her studies with the same enthusiasm and dedication as her grandfather. She views architecture not just as an academic pursuit but as a means of self-expression and a pathway to achieving her dreams. She is eager to apply her knowledge to real-world projects and hopes to contribute meaningfully to the field.
As she embarks on her university journey, Gao Yichen is filled with anticipation and excitement. She hopes to broaden her horizons, acquire practical skills, and excel academically during her time at Tianjin University. Beyond personal achievement, she aspires to make significant contributions to China’s architectural landscape, a goal that aligns with her family’s legacy and her grandfather’s expectations.
Reflecting on the challenges ahead, Gao Yichen remains confident and resolute. She draws strength from her grandfather’s wisdom and experience, knowing that perseverance and a love for learning are key to realizing her ambitions. “This path won’t be easy,” she acknowledges, “but with determination, I believe I can overcome any obstacle and fulfill my dreams.”
As the latest member of her family to join Tianjin University, Gao Yichen embodies the enduring values of dedication and passion that have been passed down through generations. With the foundation laid by her grandfather, she is ready to build her own legacy at the university.
