The new fall semester of 2019 has welcomed the first group of 112 students to the University-level Talents Cultivation Platform for Emerging Engineering Education – Future Intelligent Machine and System Platform. This is the implementation of the Coherent-Collaborative-Interdisciplinary-Innovation(CCII)at Tianjin University.
On April 25 of this year, Tianjin University officially issued the “CCII” for the construction of emerging engineering education, exploring methods to cultivate talents with high moral standards and using them as a guide in the overall process of training, building an open and cross-border integrated new arts and science education and multi-disciplinary engineering education with Chinese characteristics, while forming a highly correlated, integrated and continuously innovative emerging engineering education system. CCII includes several multi-disciplinary and multi-participation open talent training platforms, such as the future intelligent machine and system platform, the forthcoming health care platform, the coming intelligent chemical and green energy platform and the future built environment and architecture. It aims to achieve the transformation and upgrading of engineering majors with artificial intelligence, big data and other technologies.
The first platform launched this year, the “Future Intelligent Machine and System Platform”, unites the resources from the School of Mechanical Engineering, the School of Precision Instruments and Optoelectronics Engineering, the School of Electrical and Information Engineering, the School of Microelectronics, the College of Intelligence and Computing, the School of Mathematics and Xuanhuai School, cooperates with other well-known domestic and foreign enterprises, such as NXP, Huawei, and Tata Consultancy Services and takes Qiushi Honors College as the platform for physical construction. The platform implements the new liberal arts and science education with TJU characteristics, strengthens the mathematical foundation and enhances the guidance of professional interest and individualized training for the students. It will cultivate students’ knowledge application ability, innovation and entrepreneurship ability, team cooperation ability and leadership.
It has been reported that the “Future Intelligent Machine and System Platform” will not directly recruit students from the college entrance examination. Instead, it carries out a secondary selection after enrollment. Of the 1047 students who had applied to the platform, 112 students were accepted and enrolled. The platform fully respects the students’ interest, provides them with more autonomous learning space and, a freer professional choice in the future. They can select one from a number of disciplines such as intelligent manufacturing, artificial intelligence, automation, electronic science and technology as a major degree and may simultaneously select another discipline as a secondary degree or a micro-degree. The platform also implements the undergraduate-graduate student run-through cultivation. According to the knowledge of the project, the undergraduate student can take the postgraduate course and have the opportunity to enter the postgraduate laboratory to participate in the scientific research project together with the graduate student. The excellent students can select the TJU Training Program for Excellence and apply for a continuous academic project which involves undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral study. At present, the students have started their study at TJU and, the platform of this semester focuses on the development of four new classes named “mathematical analysis of engineering”, “thinking and innovation”, “design and construction” and “design and practice of intelligent electronic design and practice” for the students to develop a strong foundation for their future.
