Ding Jiali, international educator and diplomat in China, was born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth College in 1878 and his M.A. Master of Arts in 1879; in 1900 his alma mater awarded him an Honorary Doctorate of Laws. In China, Ding once served as Deputy Consul for the US Consulate in Tianjin. He co-founded and served as President of Peiyang University (now Tianjin University) from 1895 to 1906, and was the supervisor of Chinese students studying in America from 1896 to 1908.
