Commencement day is drawing near. Among all the students of the Class of 2017, there are 481 foreign students coming from 74 countries. Let’s hear some of their stories about coming to and learning in Tianjin University.
Peter Richard Hoffman from Seychelles, majoring in Civil Engineering.
Before I came to Tianjin, I studied in England University, and as I heard more about China and grew more curious about its culture, I wanted to have a change and see the differences (between western and eastern cultures). When I was searching online for information about studying in China, I saw the introduction about the major of civil engineering in Tianjin University and knew it was very good. So I chose to study civil engineering in Tianjin University. After five years here, I want to say it is really a good place to study, to make friends, to interact with people of different cultural backgrounds. It’s been a fascinating and rewarding experience.
Lontchi Claude Bernard from Cameroon, majoring in Business Management.
Back at home, I wanted to study finance. And I learnt that the Chinese economy has been developing very fast in recent years, and research in the financial field is at a relatively high level. I decided to come to China. Then my friends recommended that I study in Tianjin University, which through later experiences I believe was a good choice! What impresses me most here at TJU is that all the students study very hard. It’s easy to see that one of the well-recognized school spirits is precise in learning and strict in teaching.
Tsedevsuren Bat-Ochir from Mongolia, majoring in Environmental Science.
I come from Mongolia, one of China’s neighboring countries. There are a lot of economic and cultural exchanges between our two countries. As a result, the Chinese language is very popular in Mongolia and it helps in job hunting. Two reasons urged me to study in Tianjin University. Firstly, Tianjin University is the oldest modern university in China and I heard a lot about its historical background, which is fascinating. Secondly, I like the city Tianjin very much. It’s gentle, peaceful and harmonious. There is not so much hustle and bustle, making it a very comfortable city to live in.
Yanviriyavong Putinun from Thailand, majoring in Architecture.
I’m from a Chinese family in Thailand. My grandfather is Chinese, who migrated to Thailand, and my father loves China very much. He always wanted me to come and learn in China when I grew up. To fulfil his wishes, I came to China five years ago and entered Tianjin University. I like architecture and Tianjin University is famous for its architecture courses. The first two years was a bit challenging due to language problems but after that everything went well. Now, I can speak Chinese pretty well, and I have finished my professional studies. What I cherish most about my years spent in TJU is the intercultural communication with students coming from different countries with different backgrounds. We studied together, participated in various activities and experienced new things and environments. It’s the best part of being at TJU and I will never forget it!
