Recently, the 2016 National Instrumental Science and Bio-medical Engineering Doctoral Students Academic Forum was held in Beijing. Over two days more than 160 doctoral students and 30 experts from over 30 universities and research institutes gathered in Beijing Information Science and Technology University for the academic exchange activities. The forum was hosted by the Academic Committee of the State Council, and organized by Tianjin University, Hefei Industrial University and Beijing Information Science and Technology University. This forum incorporated four sub-forums, including the Modern Testing Technology and System, the Micro-nano System and Technology, the Bio-medical Engineering, and the Computer Vision Detection and Advanced Imaging Technology. The purpose was to provide the doctoral students with an advanced academic exchange platform covering a wide range of fields intersecting instrumental science and technology and bio-medical engineering.

Participants in the opening ceremony included: Ye Shenghua, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Zhang Guangjun, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the President of the Southeast University, Cao Xiaofeng, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and expert from the Genetics and Development Biology Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Liu Ming, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and expert from the Microelectronics Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wang Yongsheng, the President of Beijing Information Science and Technology University, Wang Yan, Vice Party Secretary of Tianjin University, Zhao Meirong, the Vice Dean of the Graduate School of Tianjin University, and other experts from Tsinghua University, Tianjin University, Nankai University, Harbin Industrial University, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Hefei Industrial University and other universities and research institutes.

At the opening ceremony, Wang Yongsheng, on behalf of the university, introduced the history, subjects and research, special advantage fields, talent cultivation, and scientific and technological innovation of the university. Then, Wang Yan introduced Tianjin University’s efforts in recent years in exploring education reform to cultivate post-graduates. He said Tianjin University had reformed three mechanisms, namely "admission selection, talent classification, and mentoring liability", to perfect a system to construct and guarantee the research and cultivation of quality through a series of incentive measures. He hoped the doctoral students would cherish the opportunity to exchange their ideas, study assiduously, and strive to be top creative talents. Finally, Ye Shenghua, the President of the forum, concluded from the experiences of Zhang Guangjun that in order to achieve success, we needed to combine learning with practice. He said: “We need to seek truth from facts in both research or in our daily lives trying to learn from life and at the same time improve ourselves in the process of learning.” He emphasized, “Engineering doctors not only need to publish several papers, but should also achieve some practical results.” He hoped that the doctoral students would cherish the opportunity for systematic learning to make creative achievements.

After the opening ceremony, all the participants took photos together. Cao Xiaofeng, Liu Ming, and Professor Chu Daping from Cambridge University delivered their reports, respectively. The forum received 153 manuscripts, including 74 oral reports and 79 posters. Each sub-forum invited more than two professors from colleges and universities to review and score all the manuscripts, and decide on awards according to the scores. The forum awarded 5 first prizes, 9 second prizes and 13 third prizes.

In the afternoon of May 29, the forum closed in the academic reporting hall of Beijing Information Science and Technology University. Cao Yuzhen, the Vice President of the Precision Instruments and Photoelectron School of Tianjin University, remarked on the academic exchange activities over the past two days. Xing Jishou, the section chief of the Technology Division of Beijing Information Science and Technology University, delivered the closing ceremony speech. Additionally, Wang Ying, the Secretary of the Party Committee of the Instrument Science and Photoelectric Engineering School of Beijing Information Science and Technology University, also attended the ceremony. After the closing ceremony, the experts presented prizes to the winners among the doctoral students, concluding a successful ending to this forum.
