Tianjin University Welcomes 13,000 New Students at 2024 Opening Ceremony

Tianjin University (TJU) hosted its 2024 opening ceremony on September 12, marking the start of a new academic journey for over 13,000 incoming students across its dual campuses. The ceremony, a significant annual event, introduced the new students to the university's long-standing traditions, symbolized by the wearing of the “Peiyang Shield” emblem and the singing of the university’s anthem.

The event, attended by senior university officials, including Party Committee Secretary Yang Xianjin and President Jin Donghan, set the tone for the students' academic and personal journeys. In his keynote address titled “Know Thyself,” Jin encouraged students to embrace self-discovery, perseverance, and a sense of duty to both themselves and their country.

"From today, the mark ofPeiyang Blue will begin to shape who you are," said Jin, referring to the university’s iconic blue color. He emphasized that students should ground their personal development in the context of national progress, urging them to synchronize their efforts with the needs of their time and integrate TJU’s values into their lives.

Jin also shared his thoughts on the importance of resilience in the face of challenges. He encouraged the new students to remain unwavering when confronted with uncertainty, steadfast in the pursuit of their goals, and humble during moments of success. "Great achievements begin with dreams and are realized through hard work," he added, urging students to take their first steps toward success with determination and commitment. Jin concluded by reminding students that "the distance between you and success is often just a matter of getting up early."

The ceremony also featured speeches by faculty members and student representatives. Zhao Zhijian, a professor from the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, and Liu Xiuyun, a professor from the School of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, shared their personal experiences of studying and working at TJU. They encouraged students to embrace the university’s rich academic culture, learn from the esteemed scholars around them, and develop a strong sense of purpose toward their country and society.

Lv Yongyang, aPh.D. Candidate from theCollege of Intelligence and Computing, spoke on behalf of the student body. He reflected on his academic journey at TJU, highlighting the growth and maturity he gained through rigorous study and research, as well as his involvement in social practice. Lv urged the new students to embrace the university's motto of "seeking truth from facts" and to persist in their efforts to contribute to the nation’s development. “Blend your personal ambitions with the collective progress of our country,” he said, “and channel your youthful energy into building a modern socialist society.”

New student representatives also shared their aspirations. Zhou Zitan from the School of Mathematics, Song Zhizhi from theCollege of Management and Economics, and Chen Shengxi, an international student from the ASEAN Class of the School of Marine Science and Technology, spoke about their journeys to TJU and their excitement for the road ahead. They encouraged their peers to take full advantage of the opportunities presented by the university and to approach this new phase of life with optimism and determination.

The opening ceremony concluded with a vibrant cultural performance featuring current students. As TJU’s 2024 class begins their academic journey, they carry with them a shared sense of purpose, inspired by the institution’s values and the call to contribute to the nation’s growth. With enthusiasm and resilience, they are poised to make their mark in both academia and society.
