Chang Jin, a distinguished professor at Tianjin University, has earned the prestigious 2024 Tianjin Excellent Teacher Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to education and research. As director of the Institute of Nanobiomedicine at Tianjin University and a recipient of the State Council Special Allowance, Chang has made significant strides in the fields of nanomedicine and biomedical engineering. His influence, however, extends beyond his own research—he is also a passionate mentor to his students, inspiring them to contribute to the country through science.

Reflecting on his recent accolade, Chang expressed a deep sense of responsibility toward his students and the future of the nation. "I hope to cultivate more exceptional teachers and researchers for the country," he said. "Seeing my students surpass me is my greatest expectation and highest honor as a teacher."

Guiding Students with a Vision of National Service

Chang's philosophy as an educator is deeply rooted in a sense of national duty. In his first lecture to new graduate students, he emphasizes the importance of serving the country through science. "Science knows no borders, but scientists have a homeland," he often reminds his students. "No matter where you go, remember that your real stage for growth and achievement is our great homeland."

He also regularly shares his personal journey—from a young man with dreams of serving the country through medicine to becoming a dedicated researcher driven by the mission of national advancement. "My first lesson is to teach students that patriotism is the soul of a scientist," he said.

Chang encourages his students to transform their patriotic ideals into concrete actions by mastering research fundamentals and adhering to strict academic standards. He insists on meticulousness in everything from experimental design to the drafting of research papers. "Scientific rigor is my unspoken lesson to every student," he said. During research meetings, Chang listens carefully to each student's project report, offering detailed guidance and encouraging critical thinking. He believes that questioning and problem-solving are essential skills for any successful researcher.

Many of Chang’s students have gone on to pursue further studies at world-renowned institutions such as Cambridge University, MIT, and Johns Hopkins University. A large number of them return to China to work in prestigious universities and research centers, contributing to fields like life sciences and nanotechnology.

Creating a Supportive Research Environment

Beyond academic guidance, Chang sees his role as a mentor in a broader context. In his lab, known asa gold-star dynamichub, he strives to create a nurturing and collaborative environment. He believes that scientific research is not just about hard work but also about maintaining a balanced life. To this end, he organizes regular recreational activities for his team, such as badminton, hiking, and skiing, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie and teamwork.

"I often tell my students that a researcher's life should be as colorful as a rainbow," Chang said. He provides financial support for these team-building activities, helping students relieve stress and bond with each other. "We are not just mentors; we are also their second family," he added.

Chang is known for offering personal support when his students face challenges. In one instance, he helped a student whose home had been devastated by floods, providing financial assistance and emotional encouragement. "Don't worry about anything here at school," he told the student. "Your job is to focus on your research—I will always be your strongest support."

Nurturing Innovation and Excellence

Chang’s dedication to fostering student innovation is evident in the numerous accolades his team has achieved. His research group has published over 380 papers, secured more than 50 patents, and taken on over 60 research projects. They have received prestigious awards, including the Tianjin Natural Science First Prize and the Tianjin Science and Technology Progress First Prize.

He also places great emphasis on tailoring his mentorship to each student, helping them discover their unique research interests.

Over the years, his students have earned top awards, including national scholarships and prizes at innovation and entrepreneurship competitions. Reflecting on their achievements, Chang said, "My greatest wish is for each ofmy students to surpass me and conquer the scientific challenges that lie ahead."

With a legacy of guiding students to success both in their academic careers and in their contributions to the nation, Chang Jin remains a pivotal figure in the world ofscientific and education.
