Huawei-Tianjin University AI Innovation Lab Unveiled

Tianjin University and Huawei, one of the world’s top information and telecom information providers joined hands and established the Huawei-Tianjin University AI Innovation Lab. Recently, the lab was officially inaugurated and its technical committee held the first meeting.

Jiang Xiangzhong, director of Huawei Beijing Research Center, Yao Jun, director of the Huawei Noah’s Ark Lab, Lei Ming, Deputy Party Secretary of TJU, and Li Keqiu, Director of TJU’s College of Intelligence and Computing attended the unveiling ceremony.

Lei Ming reviewed the deep cooperation between TJU and Huawei in her speech, stating that Huawei’s pursuit in basic research and technological breakthroughs is in line with TJU’s promotion of engineering and science education. The two sides should deepen industry-university-research collaboration by integrating university advantages with enterprise need. “Hopefully, we work together to promote hardware development, software open source, talent cultivation, and commercialization of achievements,” said Lei.

She futher elaborated that the establishment of the Huawei-Tianjin University AI Innovation Lab is a new measure for TJU to deepen the cooperation with enterprises and promote the coordinated development of integration between industry and education. It has significant strategic significance in facilitating breakthroughs in cutting-edge AI technology. She expected that, with joint efforts, TJU and Huawei can make new and crucial contributions to the innovative development of AI in China.

Jiang Xiangzhong emphasized that in recent years, Huawei has put more emphasis on close cooperation with the academic community, and Huawei is highly consistent with TJU in the fields of computer science, chemical engineering, precision instrument and so on. In the future, the Beijing Research Center of Huawei will collaborate with TJU in multiple fields, solidifying the “Chaspark” platform and exploring efficient paths for talent recruitment, as well as identifying young high-potential talents.

Yao Jun expressed the hope to leverage this innovation lab to strengthen the layout of basic research and engage in more in-depth scientific research cooperation with TJU in areas such as Large Model and Agent.

In recent years, in order to serve the strategic needs of the national information industry, Tianjin University has integrated multiple disciplines such as computer science, computer software, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity to establish the College of Intelligence and Computing in 2018. Since its establishment, under the joint efforts of all teachers and students, the college has made great progress in various aspects, among which the discipline of computer science has entered the top 1,000 of ESI worldwide, and the School of Computer Software has been approved as one of the first national characteristic demonstration software college. In the past five years, the College of Intelligence and Computing has led more than ten national key research and development projects, and this year, it has won two national teaching achievement awards.
