 Campus

Sports Star: Tian Yuze, a PhD student at Tianjin University, majored in Solid Mechanics; the captain of Martial Arts Team.

For Tian Yuze, martial art (Wushu) is both his teacher and his friend. In the hard training since childhood, martial arts have taught him how to calm down; in the college, martial arts provide a harbor for him to relax.

Say hello to Martial Arts once again

Tian Yuze has had close ties with martial arts since he was a child. At first, Tian took them as games to play with his father. Gradually, he touched the spirit of the martial arts. When he entered junior high school, Tian accepted systematic training and laid a solid foundation of basic skills, beginning with Changquan and other boxing. He once stopped the martial arts training for the academic reason, but after entering the college, he joined the martial arts team without any hesitation. He picked them up.

Striking at the hedge just for being a better martial arts inheritor

With the help of coach, Ma Fei, Tian together with his teammates focused on the hard training all the time. The maximum intensity of training, five days a week, three hours at a time, from basic skills to boxing and equipment, he never slacked off. Even in the busiest time of his studies, Tian did not miss one training. Sometimes he had class in Weijin Road Campus, while he still tried to come back to train.

But how many movements can one grasp in four years? Tian Yuze gave us a surprising answer. He spent four years specializing in two sets of movements, one is Bagua Zhang, the other is Nine-Section Whip. It took Tian a whole year to practice basic movements of Nine-Section Whip with a sticky tape ball. Facing the repetitive practice, Tian also thought about giving it up, but he believes that it is the charm that Wushu featured. Martial arts not only strengthen one’s body, but also temper one’s will.

During these years, martial arts also granted Tian Yuze some “medals” on his body. After having a good command of basic movements, Tian started use the real nine-section whip, a nine-steel nodes whip equaled in length to the body and connected by rings. Tian rolled up his trousers to show us the scars on his legs. Those scars are not pain for him, but witnesses for his diligence.

Strengthen the body and cultivate the mind

The experience of martial arts training has taught Tian Yuze a lesson that More Haste, Less Speed. As a PhD student of Solid Mechanics in Tianjin University, Tian orients his research area to a more basic field, just as the practice to consolidate the basic skills. Gradually, Wushu has become an indispensable part of his life.

Tips to be a Sports Star

Tian Yuze gave some advice to those who are interested in martial arts:

First of all, Rome was not built in a day. There is no Quick Method in martial arts. Pay attention to the basic skills, step by step. It is not fast to grasp a set of boxing in a month; or it is not slow to only practice horse stance in a year.

At the same time, do not go too far in the pursuit of traditional routines. It is healthier and safer to be combined with scientific guides.

If you have any questions about martial arts, Tian Yuze will warmly welcome you to come to the Peiyang Wushu Association to communicate with you. You can also have the opportunity to join the martial arts team.
