On Nov. 11 and 12, the 2023 "FLTRP·Guocai Cup" -- "Understanding Contemporary China" National College Students' Foreign Language Ability Competition Tianjin Division Competition was held in Tianjin University. It was also the 26th Tianjin College English Speech Competition. Eighty-two students selected through university-level preliminary contests from over 30 higher institutions in Tianjin competed in the contest, which was divided into two parts: the semi-final and the final round.
Themed around Understanding China and Communicating with the World, contestants talked about their perception and expectations of “the Chinese Path to Modernization” in their prepared speeches. Kuang Siying from Tianjin Normal University spoke about China's efforts to promote education equity and expressed hope that a world where every kid truly matters is not far away.

“Porcelains are the wisdom of the Chinese people, and the art of earth and fire, the gift bestowed by the nature,” said Jin Yunqiang with great passion. Jin from Tianjin University of Finance and Economics used his hometown,Jingdezhen, as an example to show China’s efforts to achieve harmony between humanity and nature.

“I’m impressed with contestants’ language proficiency, their sharp minds and most importantly, their thought-provoking understanding and interpreting of the Chinese society,” said Li Hongbin, one of the judges.
A total of twenty-four students made it to the final competition. Out of these, three students emerged as the Outstanding Winners, while five students secured the first prize. Additionally, seven students were awarded the second prize, and nine students received the third prize.
It’s learned that the top fifteen winners have been selected to represent the Tianjin region in the upcoming national competition. They will proudly compete against participants from other regions, showcasing their skills and talent on a national platform.
Hosted by the School of Foreign Languages, Tianjin University, the English Speaking Contest was sponsored by Tianjin Municipal Commission of Education, Tianjin Education Enrollment Examination Institute and the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press.
