Professor Kang Jian, Honorary Dean of Tianjin University’s School of Architecture, Fellow of the Institute of Acoustics and also of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and a Member of The Academy of Europe, was awarded the Rayleigh Medal by the Institute of Acoustics.

The Rayleigh Medal is the Institute of Acoustics' premier award, awarded without regard to age to persons of undoubted renown for outstanding contributions to acoustics. The medal is named after John William Strutt, Third Baron Rayleigh (1842-1919), a very versatile physicist who conducted both experimental and theoretical research in virtually every branch of the subject. A graduate, fellow and eventually Chancellor of Cambridge University, he was a fellow and president of the Royal Society.

Professor Kang Jian was appointed to his first professorship in acoustics at Sheffield University; more recently he took up the post of Professor of Acoustics and Soundscape and Head of the Acoustics Group at University College London. He is President of the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration; he also chairs the European Acoustics Association Technical Committee for Noise and the EU COST Action on Soundscape of European Cities and Landscapes. Since 2019, he has been appointed as Honorary Dean of the School of Architecture at Tianjin University.
