Tianjin University martial arts team claimed two gold, one silver and two bronze awards in 2022 China Martial Arts Routine Championship held in Liaoyang City, Liaoning Province from May 10 to May 13. More than 600 athletes from 115 universities gathered together in the championship to demonstrate their sporting skills and the martial arts spirit, including seven athletes from Tianjin University martial arts team. The team also claimed the Prize for the Best Organization, with coach Ma Fei and player Tian Yuze awarded the honors of outstanding coach and outstanding athlete respectively.
This year witnessed an exceptionally fierce competition among athletes. On the first day, Dong Pengfei, a graduate student of Grade 2021 from the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, won the first gold medal in the women’s Xingyi boxing competition with her superb boxing skills. Zhang Peizhe, a 2019 undergraduate from the School of Science, took the bronze in the men’s traditional Chinese sabreplay competition for his flexible use of Miao Dao. On the second day, Zhou Peizhen, a 2022 undergraduate from the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, gave a wonderful performance with Fengmo cudgel and claimed the gold medal in the men’s traditional Chinese cudgelplay competition. Zhu Danni, a 2020 undergraduate from the School of Education, finished third with double whips in the women’s soft weapon event. On the third day, Tian Yuze, a student of Grade 2020 from the School of Mechanical Engineering, brought his excellent whip skills to the competing stage and took the silver in the men’s soft weapon event. Gao Xuesong, a doctoral student of Grade 2019, and Song Chaogao, a 2021 graduate student from the School of Intelligence and Computing, also clinched awards in men’s pictographic boxing and Shaolin boxing respectively. After fierce competition, Tianjin University martial arts team eventually clinched 2 gold medals, 1 silver medal, 2 bronze medals, 2 fourth, 1 fifth and 1 sixth in the championship. Due to the outstanding performance, the team was invited for an interview by the Bureau of Culture and Tourism of Liaoyang City and local TV Station, in which the team members, Tian Yuze and Zhu Danni, talked about their experience of practicing martial arts and feelings about daily training with other members.
It is reported that since the establishment of the martial arts team in 2019, the coach Ma Fei has been striving with great enthusiasm and efforts. In fact, most of the abovementioned athletes were actually greenhands when they first joined the martial arts team. Given this situation, Ma Fei started with regular training twice a week for the athletes to strengthen their physical fitness, and gradually put them through intensive strength training after they have registered for the championship. What is worthy of recognition is that all the anxiety, sweat, exhaustion and scars brought by hard training motivates the athletes to persevere with great fortitude and pursue perfect performance in the competition. Eventually, each of them succeeds in creating glories of their own.
It is the joint efforts of Tianjin University, the Sports Department, the coach and all the team members that result in the team’s excellent achievements in this championship. In the future, Tianjin University martial arts team will continue to carry forward the spirit of “higher, faster and stronger” with full confidence, and pool strengths to scale new heights.
