On April 25, Tianjin University unveiled its School of Engineering Education on Peiyangyuan campus. The school is also officially recognized as the municipal-level School in Tianjin, the first of its kind in the city.

The school is committed to promoting the deep integration of industry and education, making sure the transformation of scientific and technological achievements in the course of improving the quality of talent training. It will design its talents cultivation plan on top of industrial needs and make scientific and technological innovation in line with national strategies. In this way, it strives to take the lead among universities in Tianjin in accelerating the construction of a talent center and innovation highland bearing national and even global importance.

An innovative council responsibility system, as well as a school-enterprise “double mentors system” will be adopted in the operation of the school. The council is composed of both the university and enterprises, who will jointly make decisions on important matters. The mechanism allows for universities and enterprises complementing each other to make innovations collaboratively by deepening cooperation in the joint training of talents, scientific researches and integration of production and education. The school also hired a group of chief engineers from enterprises with expertise and a strong sense of responsibility as tutors of master and doctoral students. In this way, it hopes to shed light on disconnection between talents training and industrial needs.

The first batch of nine enterprises join the council. They are State Grid Tianjin Electric Power Company, Xiamen Intretech Inc, ENN Group, China North Industries Group Corporation Limited, Ordnance Industry Group Company Limited,China Electronics Technology Group Corporation, China International Engineering Consulting Corporation, China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation Limited, China National Chemical Engineering Group Corporation Limited, China General Technology (Group) Holding, Limited. Nine managers from these enterprises are hired as mentors. The School promises to hire more enterprise mentors according to the demand of talent training.

The School of Engineering Education aims to build into a world-class engineering school by forming a new paradigm for engineer talent cultivation where industries are inducted into the education process.

The school will cultivate outstanding engineers, engineering managers, and engineering scientists who heed the national major strategic needs and pitch into key core technologies and major engineering issues in the fields of electronic information, energy storage, machinery, materials, and chemical engineering.

Under an innovative educational mode and management system, best resources within the university and from enterprises will be pooled on strengthening Industry-University-Research educational cooperation. Enrollment standards, training programs, and research topics will be designed collectively by the university and enterprises and the ensuing achievement will be shared by both sides. Teaching resources concerning faculties and courses will be sufficient, multiple platforms will be available and favorable policies will be ensured to build the community of industry-education integration for talent cultivation.

Government officials including Wang Xu, member of the Standing Committee of Tianjin Municipal Committee and Secretary of Municipal Education Work Committee and Luo Yan'an, member of Tianjin Municipal Education Work Committee and Deputy Director of Municipal Education Committee attended the ceremony. Many distinctive figures in academia were also present, including Huang Wei, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhu Guangsheng, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Yang Xianjin, Secretary of Party Committee of Tianjin University, Jin Donghan, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of Tianjin University, Yuan Yingjin, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Wang Chengshan, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering. Representatvies from other universitites together with some teachers and students from Tianjin University were present as well.

Secretary Wang Xu, Deputy Director Luo Yan’an, Secretary Yang Xianjin and President Jin Donghan unveiled the school together.
