She is a national second-level athlete who championed in a national track and field competition; a community service lover who has been dedicated to student affairs; and a stellar student who was recommended for graduate admission candidacy Zhu Bangyi (朱邦怡), an undergraduate student from Class 2023 at the College of Management and Economics (CoME), depicts her university life with tenacity, diligence and self-discipline.

Set a goal and stick to it

Zhu Bangyi entered university with a clear goal to pursue a master’s degree, so she prioritized academic studies throughout her whole college life. After she secured the postgraduate admission to Tsinghua University, she said that excited as she was, it was more important to be better prepared to face future difficulties and challenges as joy would fade with time.

For her, academic excellence came from strict implementation of phased plans made to achieve the final goal step by step. Guided by the plans, Zhu Bangyi has lived a quite orderly routine life since her freshman year, getting up early in the morning, doing physical training for 2-3 hours after class in the afternoon, and then continuing to study or working on student affairs until late. Zhu Bangyi also joined several scientific research programs and participated in many national innovation and entrepreneurship projects. She once won the second prize in the National College Students Statistical Modeling Contest of Tianjin Municipal level.

Zhu has gained recognition for her excellence in study and research.

“We should have the courage to try new things. Some undergraduates felt intimidated by the challenges posed by scientific research. But I didn’t back up as I saw the opportunities it brings. ” Zhu never let go of any chance that led her to scientific research and paid close attention to the training opportunities the CoME or the university provide, such as the CoME management research camp and Maker’s Campus.

Secondly, Zhu Bangyi believes that the ability to read literature and analyze data is also crucial to scientific research. Joining the CoME research camp in her sophomore year, she learned research and data analysis methods used in empirical papers, which laid a solid foundation for her in academic study and research.

Enjoy sports and keep forging ahead

Along with excellent academic performance, she is also a national second-level athlete with numerous outstanding awards, including the champion in 2017 National Traditional Sports School Track and Field League and was among the top three in 2021 Tianjin Municipal University Games. Sports, something that she has been committed to for 13 years, has already become an inseparable part of her life. Apart from the athletic honor she derives from sports, it is also a way to let her hair down, and even help promote learning efficiency to some extent. So it may seem difficult for others to balance study and sports, for Zhu Bangyi, however, the two go hand in hand with each other.

Zhu was inevitably afflicted by injures and illness athletes usually face. Back in high school, she suffered from lumbar muscle strain caused by years of training which even made it a torture for her to turn over. The ailment resulted in her absence from systematic exercise for a relatively long time and a decline in grades, let alone to attend competitions in the first summer vacation.

“I was very depressed back then. It seemed all my past efforts had been for nothing.” But the girl pulled herself together to recover from injuries and resumed training step by step, preparing for the coming year. “Life is a long journey. We have to look forwrd.” Hard work finally paid off as she obtained the national second-level athlete certificate and won national-level championship.

It was this unique experience as an athlete that reminded Zhu Bangyi that perseverance is the key to everything, be it sports, study, or life. There is no road in vain, and every step counts. “No difficulty ever lasts long. Face them with a positive attitude, we will learn how to deal with them and empower our body and soul.”

Community experience rewards.

Zhu Bangyi has served in many student organizations and being around people with the same interests is a big bless for her.

“Community life is a necessity for me. My sense of community was cultivated by my experience as a member of the Track and Field Team ever since my primary school. It makes me happy to work with friends and achieve something together.”

Zhu Bangyi is organzing a class meeting.

As the class monitor, Zhu organized many activities to bring all classmates together and instill a sense of belonging into every member of the class. As a senior student who was selected to provide peer guidance to freshmen, Zhu took pains to help new comers to adapt to college life as soon as possible. “Most of the time, I’m like a bridge that links freshmen with some seniors who share their experience of college life with them.”

Remaining true to yourself

When asked about why she chose Tsinghua University’s hospital management for further education, she said that foremost, it sparked her interest. Her parents are both engaged in medical practices. “From a very young age, I took medical workers as my idols. It will be a fascinating challenge for me to link my undergraduate major, that is, management science to medical industry.”

Zhu also talked about how she understood the important role her future major plays in improving people’s livelihood. “Nowadays China’s medical reform calls for improvement. With an aging population, it will be very meaningful if I could use what I will learn to improve the accessibility, affordability, and safety of the country’s healthcare services.”

How to live our university life to the fullest? Zhu Bangyi’s answer is to try different things and find the one you are adept at or love, but never slack in study. “Maybe we all face huge pressure from peer competitions, but don’t let others distract you from your own path since each of us has our unique experience and strength. Why not take our current self as the coordinate and compare it with our past and future to find our own path?
