In March 2022, the Ministry of Education (MOE) approved the cooperation between Tianjin University and the National University of Singapore (NUS) in Fuzhou to launch master’s cooperative programs in chemical engineering, chemistry and physics. This marked another breakthrough for Tianjin University’s Sino-foreign cooperative schooling after the approval of the Georgia Tech Tianjin University Shenzhen Institute (GTSI) in April 2020, thereby placing our total number of cooperative schooling programs and institutions among the top universities in China.

Covering an area of 182 acres, the first phase of the Fuzhou International Campus of Tianjin University was completed in October, with a total construction area of 140,000 square meters. This new campus was officially opened on December 5 when the administrative and research teams moved in. Within this year, GTSI initiated the construction of campus, a low-carbon and resilient campus in future, with the student activity center (design) awarded as the first “capacity building” in Shenzhen.

TJU has been committed to promoting cooperative education with Fuzhou City, Fujian Province and NUS. To make the joint institute a reality, the two universities have held more than 20 meetings, improved more than 40 versions of the plan and revised 37 versions of the agreement on school operation since the working group was set up in December 2020. Four years of concerted efforts culminated in the approval of the school project by MOE. At the same time, the collaboration between the two universities was awarded the highest collaboration score for Chinese institutions involved in international collaboration in 2021 by the Nature Index 2022 Big 5 supplement. This marked the deepening of the strategic partnership between the two institutions.
