2022 witnessed TJU’s efforts in building a strong team of supervisors. Forging ahead with the Action Plan for First-class Graduate Education of Tianjin University, TJU built a postgraduate allocation system with a view to foster qualified talents, favoring supervisors who are committed to national key fields of study and cultivating talents in-demand. This helped train a high-level supervisory team with TJU’s characteristics. To create a nurturing atmosphere, Qiushi Forums for supervisors were hosted in all schools where faculty could exchange their experiences in education and enhance teaching skills. And the training system was improved by launching a program to improve the innovative and entrepreneurial abilities of supervisors. Also, to improve postgraduate education, the evaluation mechanism was optimized through, for instance, adopting a system for assessing how competent supervisors are. When guiding faculty to perform their duties of cultivating moral characters, the university for the first time selected Qiushi supervisors and teams who excelled in teaching and research, as good examples in fulfilling teachers’ duties. 17 schools were selected as pilots for collaborative cultivation conducted by supervisors and counselors, who are expected to optimize their relationships with students and enhance a sense of responsibility in nurturing young minds.

Within this year, various measures were taken to foster top innovative talents, improving the innovation ability and dissertation quality of graduate students. As one of the first batch of national pilots for the reform of engineering master’s and doctoral training, TJU was granted three national special projects for the cultivation of highly-needed high-level talents in energy storage technology, biomedical devices, and new materials. For the first time, the university was approved to enroll 64 doctoral students supported by national research funds program. Also, continuous efforts in developing core courses led to the first 88 courses being qualified. To encourage academic research of graduate students, a series of activities were carried out, such as academic forums for doctoral students. Besides, TJU led the compilation of the basic requirements for the dissertation of master’s degree in engineering, and co-organized the 2022 annual meeting of the Association of Chinese Graduate Schools (ACGS).
