The Chinese version of "Organic Chemistry" (David Klein) has been published and released by the Higher Education Press through the joint efforts of Cao Ying, editor of the Higher Education Press, and Associate Professor Zheng Yan and other teachers of the Organic Chemistry Department of the School of Science. The book consists of 28 chapters, 2.6 million words and 1200 pages, printed in two colors on lightly coated paper.
Though,a latecomer to organic chemistry textbooks, Organic Chemistry by David Kelvin has played an essential role in its kind. It is based on a lecture-based textbook and is a summary of the author’s experience in teaching organic chemistry at UCLA and Johns Hopkins University. In fact, students have been haunted by organic chemistry for a long time due to its numerous knowledge points and branches. The textbook was released shortly after he got his doctor’s degree. Therefore, at that time he could fully understand the thoughts and problems of students as seen in his unique perspective on and approach to solving difficulties. Once published, the textbook has been well received by students and has long ranked the top of Amazon’s organic chemistry textbook lists. At the same time, it has also been recommended as a reference textbook by foreign universities such as Harvard University and Cambridge University.
Compared with traditional classical textbooks, Klein's Organic Chemistry has the following features: with a detailed explanation of basic knowledge, it enables students to achieve the smooth transition from inorganic to organic chemistry; it is well organized as seen in its fine division of knowledge and clear writing logic; it focuses on the application of knowledge, supported by numerous problem-solving methods and specifications; there are tiered exercises, ranging from simple to difficult, from thematic to comprehensive and challenging exercises, with a wide range of application; and it is filled with various and classified extended knowledge, covering areas including industrial production, the environment, biochemistry and daily life.
The translation and publication of this textbook has received strong support from leaders at all levels. The publication of the textbook coincided with the "2022 Seminar on Teaching Organic Chemistry in Higher Education". At the opening ceremony, Gong Jinlong,Vice President of Tianjin University and Liu Changlong,Party Secretary of the School of Science inaugurated the launch of the textbook.
During the conference, Higher Education Press also presented the new book to some participants for the promotion of the textbook. At the same time, the book will be used as a textbook for the course "Organic Chemistry" in the Strengthening Foundation Plan of applied chemistry and the training base for top chemistry students in the School of Science of Tianjin University. Its publication will not only promote the cultivation of chemistry talents in Tianjin University, but also provide an important reference book for the "Organic Chemistry" course in domestic higher education institutions.
