On September 2, the School of Foreign Languages invited Mr. Chen Mingming, former ambassador at China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to give the first lecture for first-year students.

Leaders of the school, representatives from translation company SPIRIT attended the event.

With the help of Ambassador Chen Mingming,the School of Foreign Languages and the company SPIRIT established a translation internship center. The school aims to strengthen the ability and professionalism of students through professional practice.

In his lecture, Ambassador Chen shared his rich diplomatic experience of more than 40 years. He systematically explained ten principles for effective English speech and shared his practical cases while serving as an ambassador. He took his Remarks at China Tourism Promotion Fair as an example, analyzing the speech sentence by sentence and explaining how to use the above principles.

Ambassador Chen used the word "Another Capacity" to introduce the theme of the speech in a humorous way, which brings countries closer. He encouraged the students to practice diligently and study hard to promote oral English communication skills, and try their best to become preeminent foreign language talents capable of taking on important responsibilities in the future.

In the Q＆A session，some students interacted with Ambassador Chen on how to become an outstanding diplomatist and requirements as an excellent foreign language talent. He encouraged students to focus on the translation according to needs during their practice, improve their English and Chinese expression skills, and learn how to write articles in Chinese. He also stressed that students should pay attention to major international issues, economic issues and China's development strategies, deepen their understanding of key issues such as the Belt and Road Initiative and ecological conservation, as well as pursue their diplomatic dreams with diligence.
