2022 World Intelligent Driving Challenge has been held this summer, combining online and offline forms. The intelligent driving team from Tianjin University (TJU) won the gold for the second year in a row in the Intelligent Connected Challenge. And this team also got the silver in Intelligent Driving Simulation Challenge. With such good performance, TJU’s team was chosen by the Organizing Committee to share their vehicle design experience.
As the international high-level event, WIDC is co-hosted by National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and Tianjin Municipal Government. Due to the pandemic, 2022 WIDC was held online as well as offline. It has attracted 143 competing teams, fromprestigious universities to well-known carmakers, like Tsinghua University, Tianjin University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Changan Automobile, NIO and XPEV.
Self-driving vehicles are running on the test road
During the Intelligent Connected Challenge, TJU’s intelligent bus was automatically operated in real traffic situation on the open test roads of Haihe Educational Distract, highlighting the whole competition. Based on software & hardware platform of autonomous domain controller and algorithm, the team successfully completed the driving operation in the following six typical scenarios--passing through the intersection with traffic lights, avoiding non-motor vehicles and pedestrians that are crossing the road, avoiding front suddenly-appeared vehicles, following front vehicles, slowly overtaking and passing through accident scenes. Eventually, TJU’s team delivered an excellent performance on online report and reply, and then won the gold.
Comprehensive Monitoring in the Competition
During the Intelligent Driving Simulation Challenge, TJU’s team engaged in the competition set for auto-driving regulated algorithm group. In the heavy traffic on the highway, their vehicles perfectly handled such challenging situations as vehicle following, road changing and emergency avoidance, ensuring all-time safety and efficiency. In the end, the silver medal came to the team.

This May, TJU’s intelligent connected bus just passed all the tests required by Management Specification for Road Test of Intelligent Connected Vehicles, testifying its operatingcapacity for real traffic sceneries. The road used in WIDC is part of open test roads for intelligent connected vehicles in Tianjin Haihe Educational District, which also got safety proof this May.
Tianjin University Team
Since 2017, professor Xiehui and associate professor Songkang from TJU Autonomous Vehicles Interdisciplinary Research Center have been guiding teams for WIDC for 6 consecutive years. In total, 18 awards have been garnered, including the golds in Algorithm Simulation Competition, Extreme Challenge Competition and Intelligent Connected Challenge Competition.
