11th Crabapple Blossom Festival Blooms

Crabapple blossoms in April quietly decorate Tianjin University with romance and splendor. As thousands of flowering crabapple trees on both campuses of Tianjin University are in full bloom, the 11th Crabapple Blossom Festival of Tianjin University kicked off. The theme of 2022 Crabapple Blossom Festival is "In Pursuit of the Dreams along the New Journey".

The festival began with live broadcasts held at 10:00 am on April 10, 2022 on Xinhua Network, Jinyun, Bilibili, Douyin, the University’s official accounts of Weibo and WeChat, among other platforms at the same time. This event attracted about 500,000 teachers, students, alumni and the public, who met online to jointly appreciate this year’s grandeur along the route where crabapple blooms.

During the festival, a variety of activities would be held both online and offline. People could participate in the online activities including live broadcasting observation of the sun, dubbing competition, online movie appreciating and poetry reading, and experience online events including delving into the new technology area, enjoying classical delicate collections resources, and exploring the library’s cultural space.

In addition, the University would also organize various offline activities, including performances on "technology" and "art" by art clubs, science and technology clubs, and student entrepreneurial teams to enrich students' flower appreciating experience.

Sixteen famous Chinese ancient paintings of crabapple (HD version) will be exhibited both online and offline during the Crabapple Blossom Festival. Tianjin University teachers and students will lead participants to paint crabapple paintings and appreciate the beauty of traditional art.

Postcards of Crabapple Blossom Festival released annually are independently designed by teachers, students and alumni. Alumni can continue to make reservations and enjoy postcard delivery services through the “1895HOME” applet released by TJU Alumni Association. Related events will be published on Tianjin University's English official website (http://www.tju.edu.cn/english/index.htm), and participants will have the opportunity to get postcards and souvenirs. This year, a series of creative cultural products on Crabapple Blossom Festival would also be launched, such as canvas bags, badges, cultural shirts, notebooks, and crabapple desserts. The popular products among them will be selected for custom production.

By 2022, Tianjin University has held "Crabapple Blossom Festival" for 11 consecutive years, with the debut in 2012 spring. The Weijin Road Campus witnesses more than 800 crabappletreesincluding the Malus micromalus Makino with long-lasting fragrance,Malus spectabilis, Chaenomeles speciosa, Malus halliana and rare species such as Malus 'Golden Hornet' and Malus 'Neville Copeman'.With most of thecrabappletrees on campus about 40 years old, the trees near the Hydraulic Center of Tianjin University boast a history of about 70 years, which are the oldest crabapple trees planted on campus so far.

The majority of the crabapple trees at Peiyangyuan Campus are concentrated on the CrabappleEmbankment on the north shore of the Central Island, with over 1,300 crabapple trees in16 species including Malus micromalus, Chaenomeles cathayensis, Malus Halliana, Chaenomeles speciose, Malus spectabilis, Malus spectabilis (Ait.) Borkh, Calophyllum inophyllum L., Ruby Begonia, Malus robusta Rehd., Malus ‘Red Splender’, Malus 'Royalty', Malus ‘Flame’, Malus “Spring Snow”, Malus “Dolgo” and Malus “Golden Hornet”. On the embankment, flowers in pink, red, and white can be appreciated.
