Four TJU Professors Elected as Academicians

 Campus

On November 18, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) announced a list of new members. Professor Yuan Yingjin of School of Chemical Engineering and Technology was elected as academician of the CAS. Professor Wang Shuxin of School of Mechanical Engineering and Professor Wang Chengshan of School of Electrical and Information Engineering were elected as academicians of the CAE. Visiting Professor Zhao Hua of School of Mechanical Engineering was elected as foreign academician of the CAE.

The four newly elected academicians have made lasting and outstanding contributions to their own fields of study. Professor Yuan has been working at the cutting edge and application field of biochemistry and has been committed to scientific research and teaching of synthetic biology. Professor Wang Shuxin has long been engaged in the study of flexible mechanism system and its engineering application to marine, medical and manufacturing equipment. Professor Wang Chenshan has been working on the research of power distribution network technology, contributing to the construction as well as the transformation of large-scale urban power grid and its scientific development in China. As the first expert who brought controlled auto-ignition combustion technology to China, Professor Zhao has made great strides in the domestic development of internal combustion engine technology and trained many talents for the State Key Laboratory of Engines.

It is reported that in 2021, the CAS has welcomed 65 new academicians, including 25 foreign experts. The CAE has added 84 members, and 20 of them are from overseas. With the inclusion of the new members, the CAS has a total of 860 academicians, among whom 129 are foreigners; the CAE comprises 971 members, including 111 foreign experts.

Professor Yuan Yingjin is a doctoral supervisor in the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology of TJU. He is also a chief scientist of the National Key Basic Research Program (973 Program), a recipient ofthe National Outstanding Youth Fund, and a leader of the innovation group. Yuan,IChemE Fellow, acts as the director of Synthetic Biology Center of Everest Program and the editor of Synthetic Biology Journal.

Yuan has been a pioneer in biochemistry and its application, and he has devoted to research and teaching of synthetic biology. He creates a crucial method to locate and repairyeast genome defects and chemically synthesized two long yeast chromosomes, No. 5 and No. 10. Method of genome rearrangement control, high-yielding yeast strain and its industrial-scale application are all pioneered by him, who hence pushes forward the genome synthesis from basic research toindustrialization. Therefore, his achievements have been awarded the Top Ten Advances in Chinese Science, the star prize of Tianjin Natural Science, the first prize of Basic Research Results of the Chinese Chemical Society, and achievement award of Hou Debang Chemical Science and Technology.

Professor Wang Shuxin is a doctoral supervisor in the School of Mechanical Engineering of TJU. He is the recipient of the National Outstanding Youth Fund and the Second National Innovation Award. He serves as the director of the Key Laboratory of Mechanism Theory and Equipment Design of the Ministry of Education, and the head of the innovation group of the National Foundation Committee for High-end Equipment Theory and Technique.

Professor Wang has engaged in flexible mechanical systems and its application research in marine, medical and manufacturing equipment. His “Micro Hand S” minimally invasive surgical robot obtains the first product registration certificate for laparoscopic surgery in China. He has produced a fleet of underwater Petrel-II gliders, which set a world record depth of 10619 meters. He wins the second prize of National Award for Technological Invention two times and the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress. In 2021, he embraces the ASME DED Leonardo da Vinci Award.

Wang Chengshan, is a professor and doctoral supervisor of the School of Electrical and Information Engineering, Tianjin University, a recipient of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, a chief scientist of the National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program), and a selected candidate of the National Hundred, Thousand, Ten Thousand Talents Project of the "National Special Support Program".

Professor Wang Chengshan has been engaged in research of power distribution network technology for a long time and has made systematic innovation achievements in optimizing the theory and method of urban power grid structure. This technology has been widely used and has played an important role in the construction and renovation of large-scale urban power grids in China. It has made important contributions to scientific development of urban power grid in China. Professor Wang also invented new technologies for operation and regulation of large urban networks, solving key technical problems of security domain analysis and operation regulation of complex urban networks. He has developed complete sets of micro-grid systems and equipment, innovated the technical application mode of micro-grid, and provided an effective solution for the efficient use of large-scale distributed power supply.

Professor Wang has won one second prize of National Technological Invention Award, and two second prizes of National Science and Technology Progress Award as the first accomplisher; He has also won one second prize of National Science and technology Progress Awards as the second accomplisher. He is also a winner of the “Science and Technology Progress Award” of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation and the National Innovation Pioneer Award. He has 39 invention patents authorized as the first inventor, 5 books published in Chinese or English as the first author, 170 papers published as the first or corresponding author. His papers have been cited more than 16,000 times and he has been selected as the highly cited Scholar of Elsevier China in recent 6 years. His team was selected as the Innovation Team of the Ministry of Education and the Innovation team of key fields of the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Professor Hua Zhao (British nationality), is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in UK and Vice President of Brunel University. He graduated from Tianjin University and obtained his PhD at the University of Leeds in UK, and he is currently the adjunct professor of school of Mechanical Engineering at Tianjin University. Professor Zhao is engaged in the research of high-efficiency engine technology, navigation power technology and alternative fuel combustion technology. He carries out targeted scientific theory and application technology research, aiming at filling the gaps in the field of engine technology in China.

Professor Zhao is the first to introduce controlled auto-ignition technology into China, and has made original innovation on combustion process of internal combustion engine, proposing theories of combustion such as the bed burning technology, micro-flame-ignition technology and two-stroke ignition technology and making breakthroughs in key technologies such as fully variable valve timing, two-stroke engine design and flexible fuel self-adaptation, thus has vigorously promoted the progress of internal combustion engine technology in China and cultivated many key members for the National Key Laboratory of Internal Combustion Engine Combustion science. He has undertaken one national 973 research Program as the chief scientist, three 973 Programs, one Overseas Outstanding Youth Fund project and more than 10 school-enterprise cooperation projects as the project leader. He has more than 100 SCI and EI publications and international conference papers. In 2020, he was awarded Haihe Friendship Award by Tianjin Government.
