2021 Online Summer Program on Chemical Engineering Held

Aiming to illustrate the enchantment of chemical engineering discipline and attract more excellent foreign students, theSchool of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Tianjin University (SCET-TJU) hosted the “2021 Online Summer Program” from Sept. 14 to 16, building an international communication and cooperation platform in the post-pandemic world.The online program attracted more than 140 overseas high school students, undergraduates and master students from 25 countries, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Tajikistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Rwanda.Professor Ma Xinbin,Dean of the School, addressed the opening ceremony.

The program consisted of various courses from the oretical teaching to practical training.After an introduction of SCET, there were video tours of teaching labs,academic lectures, experimental demo classes and Chinese culture classes, providing an immersive experiencefor all the participants.

 

Teachers from three prestigious overseas universities and SCET were invited to lecture online courses. Prof. Mohammad Naghi Eshtiaghi and Asst. Prof. Sira Srinives from Mahidol University (MU) introduced the latest research progress of food processing technology and nanotechnology respectively. Prof. Lee Chew Tin of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) gave a lecture about how to enhance academic visibility through high impact publication. Asso. Prof. Chin Sim Yee of Universiti Malaysia Pahang, presented a sustainable chemical engineering technology for turning palm trees into bio-based chemicals.Prof. Zhang Yumiao from SCET displayed the application of chemical engineering technology in medical carefield.

In the experimental demo classes, Senior Engineer Qi Xiangjuan gave an interesting scientific lecture on ethanol for senior high school students. Engineer Xiao Xiaoming showed a video tour ofthe Experimental Center of Basic Chemical Engineering of TJU, and guided students to carry out virtual simulation experiments,which vividly demonstrated the explicit perception of chemical production processes in industries.The Chem-E-Carteam of TJU introduced the Chem-E-Car competition and their participating experience, and they also shared their campus life and feelings about taking part in academic competitions.

The lecture on Chinese culture from Prof. Yin Xiaojing deepened the participants’ understanding of China. She encouraged international students to learn more about China.Mr. Liu Wenwei,Director of the Admissions Office of the School of International Education, explained the admission policies of TJU for the international students.

The online program enlightened the participants on the importance of chemical engineering discipline for green and sustainable development of human beings, and also enhanced the international influence of Chinese chemical industries. At the end of the program, students all expressed their hope of studying at TJU in the future.

The School of Chemical Engineering and Technology is planning to provide more training programs, hold international academic meetings on education and researches, and build more cooperative platforms for foreign universities.
