Ranking first in academic performance, Wang Xi, an undergraduate of Class 2021 from the School of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, was recommended to study for her PhD at Peking University’s School of Pharmacy due to her outstanding academic performance and social services.

As one of the first four pilot colleges in China to promote the internationalization of colleges, the School of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology of TJU where Wang Xi has studied for four years, adapts a mode of pure English teaching, which was a tough challenge for Wang Xi when she was a freshman. However, Wang studied hard and obtained impressive achievements. In the past four years, while minoring in Finance at Nankai University, Wang has obtained national scholarships twice with 37 major courses scored above 90 and will pursue her academic study at Peking University for the next 5 years.

"I am just an ordinary person. A large part of my achievements should be attributed to my diligence and self-discipline." In the past four years, Wang Xi has been awarded more than 20 advanced individual titles, such as the title of "Three Good Students" of TJU for three consecutive years.

Wang Xi has a great passion for scientific research and innovation. For example, in the first semester of her freshman year, she won the first prize in the individual theory section in the municipal Chemistry Competition. In the second semester of her sophomore year, she joined Professor Du Yunfei's medicinal chemistry research group, where she received professional and comprehensive training that prepared her for research work.

Under the guidance of Professor Du, Wang Xi made many impressive achievements. She led a municipal-level college student innovation and entrepreneurship project, published a paper in Chinese as the first author and participated in the publication of three high-level SCI papers, with a cumulative impact factor up to 8.66. In addition, she has submitted an English review paper to RSC Med. Chem. and the paper is currently under review. In 2020, Wasng Xi was awarded the honorary titles of Tianjin University Student Science and Technology Talent and Tianjin University Science and Technology Innovation Model.

In Wang’s opinion, just as the school anthem goes, instead of empty talk, students must take great action to rejuvenate the country. ”Pharmacy is a subject that attaches great importance to experimentation. It calls for hard work at the laboratory,” said Wang.

“You have to pore over the literature, constantly adjust experimental plans, prepare and make presentations with your team partners, and stay up all night sometimes. You also have to complete innovative experiments alone that no one has done before, during which you may fail for many times and learn from these failures until you succeed in the end. Only when you have experienced all of these above things, can you say that you really understand the meaning of scientific research."
