Recently, Tianjin University officially released The Plan for Building a World-class University. The Plan included seven parts, namely, guiding thoughts, the goal, the planned disciplinary fields, the strategy and orientation of the university, the content of construction, expected achievements, and organizational guarantee.
The Plan formulated a “Three New Steps” strategy for building a world-class university with Chinese characteristics, and the integrity of Tianjin University: by 2020, the University will become a world renowned high level university; by 2030, the University will basically become a world-class university with Chinese characteristics with integrity of Tianjin University; and by 2045 (by its 150th anniversary), the University will finish building a world-class university with Chinese characteristics, with the integrity of Tianjin University.
Tianjin University adheres to the disciplinary development idea of “consolidating engineering, strengthening science, revitalizing humanities and developing medicine”, within an innovative organizational model of disciplinary fields. The University gives priority to ten disciplines including chemical energy, new materials, management and economics, chemistry and life sciences, sustainable building and environment, construction engineering safety, intelligent manufacturing, photoelectric information, data science and environmental ecology, which covers traditional preeminent disciplines and emerging disciplines.
For the development goal of 2020, the Plan proposes key development tasks and reform tasks, including the implementation of an advanced talent training plan, the implementation of a first-rate faculty team development plan, the implementation of developing an innovation capacity plan, the implementation of a Tianjin University culture construction plan, the implementation of the achievement transformation plan and the improvement of the internal governance system, the improvement of mechanisms for a system reform system, the establishment of the community’s involvement and supervision system, reform of the resource allocation system, and the improvement of international cooperation and exchange system.
The Plan emphasizes that by 2020, Tianjin University will comparatively complete a comprehensive discipline layout, incorporating a number of world-class disciplines and fields. To form a new model of talent training with Tianjin University’s characteristics, it will cutting through the entire education process between undergraduate, master and doctoral education and to bring together a group of leading experts to build a world first-rate faculty team. To improve science and technology innovation system it plans to produce a number of landmark achievements with international influence. To accelerate the transformation of scientific and technological achievements it will build high-end think tanks. TJU will deepen the international cooperation strategy to build the world scientific and cultural academic exchange center. The University will explore the community’s involvement mechanisms to establish and improve a modern university system. Tianjin University will improve its cultural system with Tianjin University integrity to become a humanities and academic highland that leads to the advancement of social customs.
In the course of constructing the world-class university and first-class disciplines, Tianjin University will continuously uphold its mission of developing education and rejuvenating the country, with the guiding motto of Seeking Truth from Facts, the university spirit of Precision in Learning, Strictness in Teaching, preserving a tradition of patriotic dedication, and pursuing innovation. Tianjin University will adhere to the ''five always'' principles: Always head in the right direction; always foster virtue through education; always serve the overall situation; always reform and innovate, and always maintain the integrity of TJU.
