On January 9, 2018, the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) was opened in Las Vegas, America. Tianjin University (TJU) undergraduate students, Deng Yanliang and Yang Shuhan, from the 2015 class of the School of Precision Instrument and Optoelectronics Engineering, were invited to this show as the only Chinese university students because of their work, Ultra-Classify which was awarded the first prize in the International Contest of Innovation (iCAN). They also won the Global Youth Innovator Award issued by the iCAN Committee.
Since 2015, the iCAN Committee has organized iCAN-CES in which some excellent works that won awards in the International Contest of Innovation were exhibited. TJU performed well in the 2017 (China Region) International Innovation Contest. Among the nine student teams from TJU’s School of Precision Instrument and Optoelectronics Engineering, one team won the first prize, three won second prizes and four won third prizes. TJU also won the Best Organization Award. In the end, the team led by Shan Yipeng, a supervisor also from the School, obtained the opportunity to participate in CES. It was the fourth time that TJU students had exhibited their works in iCAN shows.
On January 10 local time, iCAN-CES was held at the Bellini Hall of the Venetian Hotel. Youth innovation teams from China and France exhibited their works on the same stage, and had detailed discussions with Xu Hui, Vice President of ERA Spread Limited, Huang Xili, a partner of Shengshan Capital, Yu Zhonghua, Secretary-general of the iCAN Committee, Li Xin, President of the United Cultures Innovation Center for International Cooperation, and CES representatives from various fields.
During the show, well-known domestic and foreign entrepreneurs, experts and scholars explored science and technology fronts, international innovation education, East-West culture, CES exhibition achievements and more. At the same time, teams from different countries made wonderful roadshows and had lively discussions about the exhibition. Deng Yanliang and Yang Shuhan delivered an eight-minute speech in English to introduce their "Ultra-Classify" image classification system, which helps to collect information through a supporting hardware platform (Ultra Socket), process this data by means of an AI cloud server, and then analyze it through the online data platform (MultiAI), and ultimately classify materials intelligently. The system has now been put into practical application, greatly improving the efficiency of enterprises. In addition, Shan Yipeng briefed the participants on TJU’s history and the current situation of innovation and entrepreneurship education, shared the initiatives and achievements of TJU’s I2I (Idea to Innovation) Innovation and Entrepreneurship Base, and introduced some excellent projects of TJU students innovation labs.
The International Consumer Electronics Show, organized by the American Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), aims to promote the combination of cutting-edge electronic technology and modern life. The show started in 1967 and has 51 years of history so far. It has become the platform in which all the major electronics companies in the world publish their products information, display their high-tech products and advocate future lifestyles.
