In the spirit of the 19th CPC National Congress and in order to bridge the gap between Art and Science, Tianjin University recently held a Calligraphy and Painting competition for students and staff.
Competition was held in Zheng Dong Library, Peiyang Park Campus, Tianjin University, in December, 2017 and was sponsored by the Tianjin University Library, the Tianjin University Calligraphy and Painting Research Society and the Tianjin University Xinzhu Calligraphy and Painting Research Society. The competition was divided into sections for professional and non-professional artists for both staff and students comprising Calligraphy, Traditional Chinese Painting and Western inspired painting and recently awarded prizes.
If the spirit of Tianjin University is Science then Art is its soul. The major focus of the University is to foster a scientific innovation to meet the needs of modern society in the new era. This requires creativity and imagination.
Not only can art inspire creativity, painting and calligraphy also expresses deep connections to the unique history and culture of China and ultimately the love for the country and its people.
Entries for this competition included about 400 students with 600 entries and about 60 staff, with 200 entries.
A total of 800 entries submitted for the competition and after preliminary evaluation, and another four reviews 90 entries from 65 students and 40 entries from 35 staff were selected for the exhibition.
The results were recently announced. Staff entries selected for exhibition received Excellent Prizes.
Student awards included three first prizes for the professional group (including paintings, soft brush calligraphy, hard-pen calligraphy) and another three first prizes for non-professional group (including paintings, soft brush calligraphy, hard-pen calligraphy)
Six second prizes for the professional group (including paintings, soft brush calligraphy, hard-pen calligraphy). Another six second prizes for non-professional group (including paintings, soft brush calligraphy, hard-pen calligraphy) were awarded, as well as nine third prizes for the professional group (including paintings, soft brush calligraphy, hard-pen calligraphy) and another nine third prizes for non-professional group (including paintings, soft brush calligraphy, hard-pen calligraphy)
It was noteworthy that one foreign teacher’s three paintings were exhibited in the competition and won Excellent Prizes. Dr. Ross Colquhoun has been learning Chinese painting under the guidance of Professor Sun Guoxi, Director of the Wang Xuezhong Art Research Institute at Tianjin University.
