In 2017, according to ESI’s updated data, there have been 3902 MATERIALS SCIENCE papers published by Tianjin University collected by the ESI database over the past ten years. This field ranked 31st amongst research institutes in the world, adding up to 38,127 individual citations and ranking 71st in the world. And there are 783 colleges and research institutes which are simultaneous entered in the top 1% of ESI MATERIALS SCIENCE. The MATERIALS SCIENCE field has become the second field at TJU to enter the top one thousand list, after ENGINEERING.
What is ESI? An evaluation tool of research performance widely adopted across the world.
ESI is the acronym for Essential Science Indicators. It is an index to measure the influence of colleges, academic institutes, and countries and regions’ international academic level in the contemporary world. Subjects entering into the top thousands of ESI represent international best top subject research level.
ESI is an analytic database built on more than 10 million bibliographic records of more than 10 thousand academic journals collected by SCI and SSCI. It is classified respectively into 22 fields according to subordinate journals, and it sorts the total number of citations from papers published in the past ten years. Entering in the top 1% of colleges and research institutes covered by ESI statistics means entering into ESI.
As mentioned previously, there are 22 periodical classifications: Agricultural Science, Biology and Biochemistry, Chemistry, Clinical medicine, Computer science, Economics and Business Studies, Engineering, Environment/Ecology, Geological Sciences, Immunology, Materials Science, Mathematics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Comprehensive Interdisciplinary, Neuroscience and Behavioral Science, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Physics, Botany and Zoology, Psychology, Social Science and Space Science/Psychiatry.
In the ESI database, every journal can only be divided into one subject, except for Science, Nature, and PNAS which are classified as Multidisciplinary. According to the reference and citation of each paper, they are classified separately again, but every paper is still only classified into one subject.
Achieving such an impressive outcome on the road to building a first-class global university, Tianjin University not only relies high-end research equipment and libraries, but the persistent effort and enterprising spirit of myriad students and teachers of TJU.
