“Compared with traditional architectural design companies, our products can provide optimal solutions for architects by virtue of information technology, big data and other technologies. As a platform service provider, our database can help construction professionals to enhance efficiency, lower costs and increase profits,” said Ms. Hu, a postgraduate student of the Tianjin International Engineering Institute (TIEI). As the first batch of graduates, she was employed by the Glodon Company Limited as an engineer in intelligent building field.

The TIEI was established in May 2014. “Currently, Tianjin University is striving to become a ‘world-class university with Chinese characteristics’ and constructing a new TJU-mode of engineering disciplines. The TIEI is a pilot field for the reform of TJU’s engineering education as well as the new construction of engineering disciplines,” said Zhong Denghua, president of TJU.

Recently, the TIEI released an employment report of the first batch of graduates. Among 36 graduates, 11 of them are engaged in intelligent construction, 7 are engaged in computer science, and 18 are engaged in electronic information. These fields are all emerging industries. “Compared with traditional schools, the TIEI attaches great importance to interdisciplinary education. Taking a building as an example, the TIEI has many cooperative projects with other majors such as automation and communication engineering. Additionally, it emphasizes humanistic education such as economy, management, and communication skills. All these have enriched professional knowledge, cultivated creativity and improved practical ability, which enable us to quickly adapt to innovative positions. When we go to job market, we find that such education grants us unique advantages in employment,” said Zhu Yongxin, a 2018 graduate.

The innovative engineering disciplines will promote the development of new industries, which will bolster a new economy. TJU hopes to build on China’s realities, draw on the characteristics and experience of international engineering education and seek to localize international education. “Relative to traditional engineering, the innovative engineering is a dynamic concept based on the new economy and new industries. The construction of the innovative engineering education, on the one hand, relies on developing a number of emerging engineering disciplines such as artificial intelligence and big data. On the other hand, it promotes existing engineering disciplines, such as upgrading traditional mechanical engineering to intelligent manufacturing, etc. Promoting innovative engineering education, and cultivating a large number of diversified and innovative engineering talents for the future is both an urgent task and a long-term plan,” said Zhong Denghua.
