During Tianjin Science and Technology Award Conference held in April, 190 science and technology awards were conferred, including a Major Achievement Award in Science and Technology, 6 Natural Science Awards, 11 Technical Invention Awards and 172 Scientific and Technological Progress Awards. Tianjin University won a total of 32 awards, of which 23 were completed as the first unit, including 1 major achievement award, 8 first prizes, 8 second prizes, and 6 third prizes. The Municipal People's Government of Tianjin awarded Academician Chen Yushu of Tianjin University the 2017 Tianjin Major Achievement Award in Science and Technology, which is the fourth time that Tianjin University has won the award. In addition, Tianjin University was ranked top in terms of the total number of awards and the total number of first prizes of all reporting units in the city.

The awards won by Tianjin University involved many disciplines such as energy, chemical engineering, materials, environment, information, and civil engineering. It is the first time in recent years that Tianjin University has won two first prizes of Tianjin Natural Science Awards in the same year. Tianjin University has actively implemented the basic scientific research policy and strengthened the strategic deployment of basic scientific research and preliminary targets have been achieved.
