Lai Zhixin is a senior student from the School of Electrical and Information Engineering of Tianjin University. He won the China National Scholarship this year, which was reported in People’s Daily. During the past three years, he lived a fulfilling life and made achievements in study, research and volunteer work.
Lai Zhixin is a very hardworking and diligent student. President Xi Jinping once said that “Young people should regard learning as a primary task, as a responsibility, a spiritual pursuit and a way of life." Bearing Xi’s advice in mind, Lai Zhixin fully devoted himself to study. For all courses, his examination scores were 96 points and higher, and he was at the top of the class for 3 years. He learned two foreign languages: English and German and has developed a special interest in mathematical modeling. Through his assiduity,, Lai won the second prize in both the China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling and the Mathematical Contest in Modeling in North America.
“It is important to apply what we have learnt into real-life practice” Lai Zhixin said. During the past three years, he joined two National Students' Program for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and won eight awards and was awarded the “Student Science Prize” which is regarded as the “Nobel Prize for Students” by Tianjin University.
In the TIC100 Smart City and IoT Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, he and his team members committed to develop a smart cane for the blind with automatic obstacle avoidance, voice broadcast, smart navigation, mode switching, and autonomous sports capabilities, which won a special prize in the competition. In 2016, he and his teammates took part in the National Undergraduate Electrical and Automation Contest on behalf of Tianjin University and won first prize.
“Don’t think I’m a nerd who spends all his time studying” Lai told the reporter. He made a good balance between study and activites. He was the Vice Chairman of the Student Union of his college, and did a lot of volunteer work. In 2015, he went to Shangqiao village in Chongqing to work as a volunteer teacher. The volunteer work in International Marathon Competition and Superconductor and Smart Grid Autumn Camp aroused his passion and enthusiasm to do more work and serve society.
