In an interview, Director Gu Xiaosong of the newly established Tianjin University Division of Medicine talked about the planning and layout of the Division’s development.
Director Gu said: “We will give full play to the advantages of medicine-engineering integration and develop an intelligent medical engineering discipline and we will strive to cultivate clinical medicine education. To foster medical talent to meet national needs, we will spare no effort to refine the development of medical education, from foundation theory to application, medicine to biomedical engineering.”
TJU’s medical education has recently made significant advances. For example, the plaque of “Tianjin Hospital, Tianjin University” was unveiled, TJU formed a comprehensive cooperation agreement with Tianjin Medical University and the Intelligent Medical Engineering program will start admitting undergraduates this year while the admission of medical Doctors is being prepared. What’s more, TJU has many supporting disciplines to cultivate new medical talent as well as its clinical medicine education about to enter the ESI’s top one percent. Therefore, TJU can utilize its abundant resources to develop medical education with the solid foundation of other disciplines.
To meet the requirements of the modern medical development, the Division of Medicine of TJU will cultivate a new-type medical talent who are prominent in new technologies, such as AI, big data, Internet, information analysis and new wearable device technology, with a comprehensive cross-disciplinary modern medicine character and will absorb much engineering knowledge.
Concerning to the disciplinary layout of the Division, Director Gu said, “The new Division’s disciplinary layout features multi-discipline joint cultivation with the integration of medicine and engineering, which marks the direction of modern medicine in Tianjin and even China. Tianjin, China and the world at large have been exploring the cohesion between the demand and supply of medical talent.”
As for the talent cultivation, Gu added: “The Division will strive to cultivate a new-type medical talent with a background in science and engineering. These people we will cultivate will not only master modern comprehensive scientific technologies but also possess a solid foundation in clinical medicine.”
