On May 12, 2018, the Third National Optoelectronic Schools Deans’ Forum was held at the Weijin Road Campus of Tianjin University (TJU). Over 70 deans, heads of departments and subject leaders from more than 30 national well-known universities and institutions attended.
Zhao Meirong, a member of the standing committee and Director of the Organization Department of Tianjin University, delivered the opening speech and described TJU’s development in optical engineering. Nine experts reported from the following subjects: the discipline evaluation from exchange experience, young talent cultivation and academic team building, personnel system reform, organization and application of scientific research projects, cooperation between universities and enterprises, cooperation between industry, universities, and research institutions, and international exchange and cooperation.
Zhang Xinliang, from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology explained the University’s thinking and the measures for the construction of the discipline of optical engineering, including the discipline data analysis of domestic well-known colleges and universities, cultivation of talent and teacher recruitment systems.
Xu Lijun of Beihang University introduced the Beihang optical engineering team, platform construction and achievements.
Fu Yuegang from the Changchun University of Science and Technology, discussed the status and development of double-world-class universities locally, focusing on how the School of Optoelectronic Engineering best uses its strengths in double-world-class development.
Huang Zhanhua, from Tianjin University, spoke about the disciplines and platform construction of TJU’s optical center, analyzed indicators of TJU’s optical center and compared them to the largest optical centers in the United States of America, elaborated on the work of TJU’s integrated optoelectronics platforms, and aroused profound thinking on the directions of discipline construction.
Zhang Long, from the Shanghai Institute Optics and Fine Mechanics, with the integration of science and teaching as the main theme, analyzed the concepts behind the institute’s engineering disciplinary construction.
Liu Xiangdong, from Zhejiang University (ZJU), pointed out the advantages and the disadvantages of ZJU’s College of Optical Science and Engineering, and discussed disciplinary development.
Zhao Ying of Nankai University (NKU) shared the exploration and thinking on Emerging Engineering construction, and introduced NKU’s College of Electronic Information and Optical Engineering’s new measures for disciplinary construction.
Yang Jun of Harbin Engineering University shared ideas and practices in discipline construction and personnel cultivation facing research universities.
Yang Lei of the Chinese Laser Press illustrated the key elements of publishing high-level optical engineering papers and introduced a new magazine.
Representatives believed this forum provided experts and directors of the optoelectronic field of national universities with a platform to exchange experience on management, discipline development and cultivation of talent, thus helping peer universities learn from each other, improve the discipline of optoelectronics and its international influence, better serving the national major goals and meeting the demands of the society.
This forum was initiated by Zhejiang University in 2016, aiming to promote domestic colleges and universities, and research institutions to reach a consensus on cooperation, exchange and coordinated development of optoelectronic discipline construction, personnel training, scientific research, domestic and foreign exchange, social services and national demand.
