On May 16, the inauguration ceremony of the School of Artificial Intelligence at Tianjin University was held in the main venue of the 2nd World Intelligence Conference, formally establishing Tianjin University’s School of Artificial Intelligence. The newly established school seeks to cultivate Artificial Intelligence (AI) talents, promote the development of the AI industry and innovation breakthroughs and industrial applications of AI in China. It also seeks to integrate and give full play to Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei talents advantages to promote the development of AI in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area and develop the Tianjin Port as a smart port.
Following the guidance of the Development Planning for a New Generation of Artificial Intelligence, issued by the state council, and Tianjin Artificial Intelligence industries layout, the School will integrate academic resources of Tianjin University, gather domestic and international scientific research resources and undertake major national-level key projects in a number of research fields to make internationally notable research achievements and establish AI talents training systems, which will form a foundation for the AI research on basic theories and key generic technologies over the next ten years.
According to the plan, by 2020, Tianjin University’s School of Artificial Intelligence will begin to take shape. It will bring together outstanding teachers including academicians, Cheung Kong Scholars, and winners of the national Excellent Youth Foundation, have a number of students and establish a teaching and research platform, forming an essentially mature school system.
In the future, the Artificial Intelligence discipline will be built into a world-leading discipline, which will cultivate a batch of AI academic masters, make world-renowned academic achievements and incubate world-renowned AI companies, contributing to the development of AI technologies in China and the world and aiding social progress.
Tianjin University has its unique advantages in doing AI research as it started early in AI research and its research in some fields of AI synchronizes with the world.
The underwater glider “Petrel”, developed independently by Tianjin University, has just broken the world record in dive depth with the maximum dive depth of 8213 meters, enabling China to obtain profile data of deeper sea areas.
The Smart Power Grids developed independently by Tianjin University, have served to optimize energy supply, automatically adjust demand and self-check hidden dangers. Related technologies have been applied in hundreds of cities across the country.
The driverless car technology developed by Tianjin University has made key breakthroughs in crucial technologies such as environmental awareness, on-board brains, and smart roads.
The brain-controlled robots developed by Tianjin University not only enable’s paralyzed patients to walk, but also explore developments in the direction of mind control. The "Tianjin University Super Brain Project" is also being implemented, in which with a human brain as the core, a machine brain as the path, a cloud brain as the center, the three brains are combined to make human-computer hybrid intelligence a reality.
Research conducted by the school of Computer Science and technology, School of Computer Software, School of Electrical Information and Engineering, and School of Mathematics on cognitive computing, data science, intelligent technologies and applications have made fruitful achievements in cognitive computing, machine learning, data mining, pattern recognition, computer vision, speech signal processing, natural language processing and other fields all contributed to the establishment of the School of Artificial Intelligence.
