The 7th National College Student Metallographic Skills Contest held in Tianjin

Tianjin University-Tianjin Polytechnic University’s “Hengyu Cup” metallurgical skills contest and the 7th National College Student Metallurgical Skills Competition qualifier were held at the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Tianjin University recently.


In this contest, 60 students from Tianjin University and Tianjin Polytechnic University participated in the competition, and 10 first prizes, 15 second prizes, and 20 third prizes were selected. This competition is divided into five groups, each group has a competition time of 35 minutes. The competition included steps such as grinding, polishing, etching, and microscope observation. The contestants completed each procedure rigorously and earnestly, and confidently handed in their own finished products. Teachers Chen Qiulong, Han Yajing, Zhang Zhijia, Wang Zheren, and Feng Lingzhi, from three colleges and universities, served as judges of the competition scoring the contestant’s entries.

The award ceremony was held at 14:00 p.m. in teaching building 31, and was hosted by Ms. Wang Ying, Secretary of the League School of Materials Science and Engineering, and director of the Institute of Engineering, Tianjin University. Prof. Hu Wenbin, Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Tianjin University, Sun Jianlin, Associate Dean of the New Material Technology Research Institute of Beijing University of Science and Technology, Director of the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of the University of Science and Technology, and Director of the National Metallographic Skills Competition Committee, Teacher Gong Jianghong, Director of the State-level Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Advanced Materials at the School of Materials of Tsinghua University, and Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the National Metallographic Skills Contest Committee, Associate Professor Chen Qiulong, Associate Professor of Experimental Teaching Center, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Teacher Liang Xiaoping, Director of Institute of Inorganic Fibres, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Tianjin Polytechnic University, Prof. He Fang, Director of the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Materials Science and Engineering, Associate Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Tianjin University, Teacher Han Yajing, deputy director of the national experimental teaching demonstration center, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Tianjin University, Professor Zhang Zhijia, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Tianjin University of Technology, and Mr. Zhou Wu, General Manager of Wuyi Hengyu Instrument Co., Ltd., the sponsor of the title, attended the award ceremony. Starting things off, Vice President He Fang announced the list of winning students. The honored guests presented honorary certificates and prizes to the winning students. President Hu Wenbin awarded the honorary certificate for the title sponsor. Finally, Teacher Sun Jianlin and Prof. Hu Wenbin delivered speeches respectively. President Hu Wenbin expressed sincere gratitude to the organizers, service providers, and contest participants, and expounded the significance of the college’s hosting of the competition and students’ participation in the competition, and has great expectations for students of materials as they continue to study hard and contribute to the construction of two first-rate disciplines.

After the award ceremony, all teachers and contestants took photos together at the entrance of the School of Materials Science and Engineering, successfully concluding the metallographic skill contest.

Preparations for the student metallurgical skill competition began in 2010 and the first national competition was held in 2012. The competition is now in its seventh year. The School of Materials Science and Engineering of Tianjin University has sent teachers and students every time to participate in the contest. The historical results are particularly prominent. This year, Tianjin University was jointly organized with the Tianjin University of Technology for the first time to further expand the scope of the contestants, increase the students' enthusiasm for the competition and forged a group of outstanding material students who are determined and fearless.
