On May 15-18, 2018, the School of Environmental Science and Engineering (SESE), Tianjin University (TJU) held the second China Korea Tianjin-Incheon Environmental Issues Bilateral Seminar. Experts from Korea and China in environmental research field were invited, including the Incheon Institute of Health and Environment, Incheon Air Resources Department, Incheon National University, KFEM Incheon, Chinese Academy of Sciences Research Center for Ecological Environment, Tianjin Academy of Environmental Sciences, China Automotive Technology and Research Center, Ministry of Transport Tianjin Institute of Water Transportation Engineering, and Tianjin Institute of Environmental & Operational Medicine. Additionally, faculty and graduate students from Tianjin University took an active part in the forum.

Prof. Chen Guanyi, Dean of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, hosted the opening ceremony in Tianjin University’s building 1895-A102 on May 16th, 2018. The representatives from China and Korea, involving Vice-president of Tianjin University, representatives of the Incheon municipal government, Dean of the Incheon Institute of Health and Environment, and Dean of the Tianjin Academy of Environmental Sciences made separate speeches during the ceremony. In the following section, professors from Korea and China made their own academic reports. They introduced their research topics, experimental methods and results, after which teachers and students asked questions. As a result, the seminar promoted the communication in Environmental Issues between Incheon and Tianjin.

On May 17th, 2018, the Korean visiting team went to the Tianjin Eco-Environmental Monitoring Center for a visit. They visited the Central Laboratory and Atmospheric Environmental Monitoring Center and discussed the Tianjin environmental issues with the leader of the center. In the end, they indicated that they would seek an opportunity to cooperate with the center and develop a favorable environment for Incheon and Tianjin together. In the afternoon, both sides had a round table discussion for the establishment of an Environmental Joint Research Center. During the discussion, professors from SESE, TJU and Incheon described their main research directions and discussed the significance of the establishment of the Environmental Joint Research Center. In the end, Prof. Chen Guanyi from SESE, Prof. Lee Sung Mo and Mr. Kim Jae Won from Incheon signed the statement together. The establishment of the center will further promote environmental studies and help solve the environmental problems between the two cities. Furthermore, the seminar will be held each year, one year in Incheon and one year in Tianjin. We hope this activity will promote cooperation in the field of environmental research between the two countries.
