Tianjin University -AVL Intelligent Driving Automotive Symposium Held

 Campus

Recently, Tianjin University jointly hosted the "Tianjin University-AVL Intelligent Driving Automotive Symposium" with the internationally renowned AVL Company during the World Intelligence Conference. At the Hongyuan lecture hall in Building 37, experts of Tianjin University, AVL, Geo-Vision, Zhixing Hongyuan, CalmCar Vision and other organizations made subject reports on hot topics, such as artificial smart driving, smart assisted driving, environmental perception,3D accurate map and edge computing, etc. More than 120 delegates from twenty more universities both foreign and domestic, research institutions and famous enterprises, such as, Baidu, General Motors Corporation, Great Wall, Smderi, Yuchai Group, Fawde as well as  Nanjing University, jointly explored the application challenges and solutions of artificial intelligence technology in the field of smart driving cars and experienced Tianjin University’s driverless cars and the smart assisted driving cars of AVL. Additionally, delegates visited the smart control laboratory and fuel cell laboratory of Tianjin University. Professor Yuan Yingjin, vice president of Tianjin University, delivered a welcoming speech and the conference was presided over by Professor Xie Hui, director of the Center for Smart Driving Cross Research of Tianjin University.

On behalf of Tianjin University, Yuan Yingjin extended a warm welcome to the experts and delegates attending the conference. He introduced a series of layout and measures taken by Tianjin University in the field of new engineering construction and artificial intelligence research, and the establishment as well as development of the Multidisciplinary Research Center for Smart Driving Cars of Tianjin University. More importantly, professor Yuan Yingjin extended a warm welcome to enterprises and institutions at home and abroad, and wished them well in developing multi-direction and multi-level cooperation on artificial intelligence and smart driving technology.

As the delegate of the co-organizers, Dr. Jiang Hong, China Director of Power Assembly Engineering of AVL Company, reviewed the historical origin of the cooperation between AVL and Tianjin University and introduced the current development of AVL and the layout of the smart driving field.

Xie Hui made a report entitled Artificial Intelligence Driving Control Technology, and discussed the necessity and application of artificial intelligence in smart driving as well as unmanned driving, and introduced the main algorithms of smart driving control platform of Tianjin University, the hardware and software framework as well as the data construction program at full length. In addition, he played a thrilling video where the driverless car of Tianjin University had just completed the wonderful performance of the cross-rally in the 2nd World Intelligent Driving Challenge and shared the unique charm of artificial intelligence technology in driverless cars with people.

Erich Ramschak, an AVL smart driving expert, elaborated the development conditions, core technologies, research achievements and related experience of AVL in driving assistance and automatic driving in the report Development, Capability and Experience of Driving Assistance and Automatic Driving.

Dr. Ma Hao of Beijing Geo-Vision Corporation made a comprehensive analysis of the location, characteristics and functions of high-precision self-driving maps in his report Precise Map Service Engine in Self-Driving. In addition, in view of the necessity, definition, production and application of high-precision maps, he shared his own opinions about these issues, which gave people a deeper understanding of high-precision maps.

Dr. Chu Linbo, general manager of the Smart Driving Division of the Beijing Zhixing Hongyuan Corporation, made a comprehensive exposition on the importance, functional characteristics and practical applications of the Smart Driving Safety Cloud in his report Smart Driving Application Based on Edge Safety Cloud, which provides people with a new concept of the combination of smart driving and the Internet.

Dr. Wang Ruoyu, technical director of Tianjin CalmCar Vision Corporation, shared own practical experience of engineering projects in the field of millimeter-wave wireless communication and sensor systems, vehicle-mounted millimeter-wave radar and environment perception of automatic cars in his report Self-driving Environment Perception Technology.

Leopold Welsersheimb, expert of AVL smart driving matching and testing, elaborated the core technologies, achievement experience analysis and related experience of AVL in the aspect of smart driving’s safety and comfort perception in his report Smart Driving Technology for Safety and Comfort Perception.

The demonstration and test driving experience of the smart driving prototype vehicle was conducted in the test area of Tianjin University smart driving. The test area is used to complete the detection and identification of complex traffic signals, such as a self-driving lane, red street lamp signals, road signs, etc. Besides, a standard garage and a control laboratory are provided to complete the test analysis of the prototype vehicle at the test field. Delegates and students from Tianjin University participated in the experience of unmanned and smart assisted driving in the pilot area, and really felt the scientific and technological charm of smart driving vehicle technology.

The delegates also visited the vehicle smart control laboratory and fuel cell laboratory located in the thermal power building, and carried on on-the-spot exchange and experience on software and hardware research platforms, and  functional characteristics of the existing big data smart network connection information collection technology, hardware-in-the-loop simulation technology, image recognition technology, voice interaction technology, smart driving virtual scene testing technology, fuel cell performance development and other technology.
