On May 20, the College Student Track and Field Competition of the 14th Tianjin Games and 2018 Tianjin College Student Track Event came to a close at Tianjin University of Finance and Economics. After two days of intense competition, TJU track and field team, led by coaches Liu Jiang, Lu Wenfeng and Meng Qingfu, scored a record high of 15 gold, 9 silver, and 6 bronze medals, and won first place in Group B (high-level athletes) in terms of the total number of gold medals.
The Tianjin Games is the highest-level sports event in Tianjin and is held every four years. In the track and field events, Tianjin University sent a total of 30 athletes to compete in the Group A (ordinary students) and Group B (high-level athletes) Competitions.
The first gold medal in track and field was won by Fu Mingxia, a student of the College of Management and Economics for Tianjin University in the women's long jump. In follow-up games, the courage and confidence of TJU students mounted as the competition progressed. In the high-level men's events, Xi Zeng from the College of Management and Economics overcome injury problems, calmly focused on the game, and became the champion in the men’s 800m and 1,500m events. It is the fourth time that he has ranked first in these two events since he participated in the games on behalf of Tianjin University. Although changing events not long ago, Zhou Yuanpeng easily won the men's 200m and 400m championships and Zhao Sa won the men’s 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles. In the women’s events, Fu Mingxia won the women’s triple jump and was awarded the women’s 4X100 relay gold medal together with her teammates Song Meijing, Hao Sijia, and Zhou Jiahui, after capturing the first gold in the women's long jump. Song Meijing from the Law School won the women's 100m and 200m championships with a strong showing. Zhou Jiahui won the gold medal in the women’s 100m hurdles and the silver medal in the women’s high jump.
Xi Zeng, Shi Boyang, and Li Mucong are now in their busy senior year, but they still actively participated in the games and set a good example for other athletes. With grit and determination, Shi Boyang and Li Mucong won silver medals in the men’s pentathlon and triple jump respectively.
The competition for the ordinary student group were equally as exciting. Xing Weichao, a postgraduate student from the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, excelled in race-walking and won the gold medal. Deng Ji from the School of Precision Instruments and Optoelectronics Engineering withstood the pressure of the competition, and won the 1,500m and 5,000m championships with only four hours of rest period between events. Notably, he broke the record for the 5,000m event, which has been held by Tianjin University for the past fifteen years. Wang Yushuo from the School of Electrical and Information Engineering received silver medals in the 800m and 1,500m events though he caught a cold in the first day of the games.
Sport represents a significant part of TJU students’ training. Tianjin University has always attached importance to the role of sports education and has always been committed to enriching campus sports activities and fostering a sports atmosphere.
