On May 20, the students of Tianjin University celebrated not only the “Love-displaying Day” (the number 520 sounds like “I love you” in Chinese) but also the “Fruit Festival”, which is held twice a year.
The spring fruit distribution was carried out at the Tailei Square at Peiyangyuan Campus and the entrance of the stadium at Weijin Road Campus. Students arrived at the spots with trolley cases and bicycles, and members of the Fruit Engineering Committee, who had worked overtime unloading the fruit, assisted in the distribution. In no more than two hours, piles of dragon fruit and mangoes were distributed to more than 30,000 students.
In order to improve students' awareness of a healthy lifestyle, Tianjin University has implemented the "Fruit Project" since 2002. Each year, Tianjin University distributes a variety of fruit to the students for free and organizes a series of health education activities in spring and autumn. After development over more than a decade, the healthy, creative and interesting Fruit Festival has become a unique cultural name card of Tianjin University and a sweet memory for her alumni.
Every year, Tianjin University’s fruit purchase is led by students. The self-initiated Fruit Engineering Committee is responsible for organizing fruit voting, quality testing, supplier selection, and distribution. Dragon fruit and mango were selected this year.
The "School of Fragrant Fruit - Academy Fruit Carnival" event was held on the morning of May 20. The rich and colorful activities fully drove the enthusiasm of students, including rope skipping, shuttlecock kicking, table tennis blowing, fruit carving, hand-painting, DIY fruit platter, and salad and juice making, among other activities. The Fruit Festival not only brings sweetness and health to college students, but also has become a beautiful cultural landscape on campus.
In the preparatory procurement period which lasted for more than one month from April, online and offline fruit campaigns were also being carried out. Through the online event "Fruit quiz", which involved guessing the fruit which will be selected, student’s understanding and enthusiasm for participating in the fruit project was greatly improved. Owing to the "Dormitory online appraisal” on Labor Day, students worked together to clean the dorms and display their achievements, thus gaining an appreciation of happiness and health through work.
The two novelty fruit tasting sessions held on May 1 and Mother's Day were aimed at breaking through the limitations of types, prices, and forms of fruit distribution. The first session was themed “Thanks to the Most Beautiful Laborer”, through which students participated in a DIY fruit meal which perfectly integrated creativity and fruit, and enjoyed the happiness of labor. The second session was themed “Fruit: Carrier of Mother’s Love”. The students could either paint or sculpt and create beautiful works under the theme. The many scripts on the on-site message board witnessed the gratitude of the students towards their mothers.
