School of Materials Science and Engineering of Tianjin University launched the Shi Changxu Honours Degree Program (hereinafter referred to as the “Shi Program”) in 2015. It aims to promote materials students to use the material scientist Shi Changxu as an exemplary model and cherish the lofty ideal to devote themselves to the cause of the motherland material industry. There are 99 members of the existing "Shi Program", and each grade consists of a "pilot class." The college has cultivated an all-round view, knowledge, ability, and quality through a combination of "individualized training of the supervisory system" and "customized grouping." At present, members of the 2015 “Ship Program” have all participated in various research activities such as college students' innovation and entrepreneurship. Six students have won awards in national competitions and 46 people have won awards in school-level and above disciplines and science and technology competitions and more than 150 people received the honorary title above the school level.
Innovate a "model": Following the principle of “individualized training of tutors in accordance with their aptitude, ability to strengthen, and pursuing excellence”, members of the “Shi plan” can choose professional tutors and cross-professional elective courses according to their own interests regardless of their professional interests. Inviting “National Teaching Masters” and “Outstanding Youth Fund” winners to conduct academic guidance, and inviting industry elites and entrepreneurs to conduct general education. Prof. Li Jiajun, Party Secretary of Tianjin University, and Prof. Li Yidan, former deputy secretary of the Party Committee of the University, also had face-to-face discussions with students.
Cultivate a "sentiment": A statue of Mr. Shi Changxu stands in the courtyard of 31 teaching buildings on Peiyangyuan Campus of Tianjin University. When the statue was completed in 2016, we specially invited Mrs. Guoyunyi, the wife of Mr. Shi Changxu, to introduce Mr. Shi Changxu's life story. Inspired by the spirit of Mr. Shi Changxu, the “Shi Program” establishes the training goals of “innovators, political practitioners, and considerate leaders”. Thematic activities such as sworn oaths, sworn statues, and livelihood of Mr. Shi Changxu are described. Inspire students to learn from Mr. Shi Changxu’s spirit of serving the country with science and technology.
Exercise an "ability": The College has customized independent teaching plans and extra-curricular activities for members of the “School Program”. It also offers special courses such as Elements of Materials Engineering, and conducts more than 20 general education courses including peer-to-peer exchanges, thematic upgrading and competition training. Our college also organizes six corporate visits, three college exchanges, and prioritizes sending out visits to other countries to continuously expand the channels for students’ full-grown talents.
