On July 10, 2018, the Tianjin University 2018 Commencement Day for Undergraduates and Degree Awarding Ceremony was held at the Weijin Road Campus. About 4,000 undergraduates graduated from Tianjin University to meet their bright futures and become fighters in the new era.  

The graduation ceremony was hosted by Vice President Wang Shuxin. Leaders, alumni and teacher representatives of Tianjin University, including Party Secretary Li Jiajun and President Zhong Denghua. Distinguished alumni representatives including Zhang Lu, founding partner of Fusion Fund and well-known investor in Silicon Valley attended the ceremony. Party and administrative leaders of each school, members of teaching and learning committees, teacher representatives, undergraduate academic staff, counselors, and other leaders of different departments also attended and gave the undergraduates their blessings. 

Leaders of TJU and different schools and representatives of degree committees turn the tassels of undergraduate graduates. 

Gong Jinlong, Director of the Academic Affairs Office read out the resolution of the Tianjin University Degree Evaluation Committee on granting the bachelor's degree. 

President Zhong Denghua is giving a speech. 

Vice President Wang Shuxin is hosting the graduation ceremony. 

The theme of President Zhong Denghua’s speech was "Being New Era's Fighters with Happiness". He emphasized the words "Happiness" and "Fighting" to the 2018 graduates to inspire them to become happy fighters in the new era who won’t give up their dreams despite to the complex realities they may face. 

He recalled the four years of university life with all the 2018 graduates and shared some of the fighting stories of alumni and graduates. He used the words of former President Mao Yisheng, "What’s the name of the bridge? It’s called fighting” to encourage the graduates. To become qualified, one should have: a pragmatic attitude of “What's learned from books is superficial after all, it's crucial to have it personally tested somehow”; tenacity of “Being sure that the green hills do not distract us and that the roots are in rock”; and the emotion of "Although in war our golden armor may be worn out, we will not leave the desert till the foes are beaten.” 

Outstanding alumnus Zhang Lu is giving a speech. 

As an alumni representative, Zhang Lu shared her happy fighting story at the undergraduate graduation ceremony. As an alumnus who had just graduated from Tianjin University eight years before, Zhang Lu said, "After my graduation, my personal growth and career development benefited greatly from the influence of Tianjin University. I am still deeply impressed by Tianjin University." She shared her experience of being an entrepreneur and investor from three perspectives: “Getting out of the comfort zone and achieving self-evolution ”; “Staying introspective and staying independent ”; and “Creating influence and being a game-changer”. She has won the titles of 2018 Davos World Economic Forum Global Youth Leader, Silicon Valley Business Weekly 2018 Silicon Valley Influential Woman, and the 2018 national top ten Chinese outstanding young person. Zhang Lu’s message to the graduates was “One should have a sense of mission no matter what they are doing. One can change the world while creating wealth, but the most important thing is to change the world.” 

Teacher representative Li Jia is giving a speech. 

Professor Li Jia, of the School of Mechanical Engineering at Tianjin University, gave a speech as the teacher representative. He encouraged the graduates to act like an eagle flying in the blue sky. He said emotionally “Every time I see off the graduates, it is like a father sending his daughter to marry; though reluctant, I am still full of blessings.” He sent a message to the graduates saying that “No matter where you go, no matter how far you go, don't forget to go home”. He hoped that the graduates will not forget the motherland and the people. 

Undergraduate representative Guan Yi is giving a speech. 

Guan Yi, an undergraduate major in Engineering Management in the Department of Management and Economics, gave a speech as the undergraduate representative. She said with emotion that the character of Tianjin University has influenced their life during the four years of study at Tianjin University, through which she also understood the expectations of her alma mater for the graduates.  

Overseas undergraduate with the Chinese name-Wu Ruilong is giving a speech. 

As a representative of overseas undergraduates Wu Ruilong from Venezuela, came to China to study because of the cultural exchange program that the Chinese government and Venezuela built together, and said he spent the his best time of his youth at Tianjin University. He said that he felt the joy and warmth of his home in the university. In the past few years, brothers and sisters from all corners of the country have been learning from each other, helping each other, caring for each other, encouraging each other, and have formed sincere friendships. This was an invaluable experience for his life and a treasure worth cherishing. 

Before the end of the graduation ceremony, all the undergraduates sang the school song and then the graduates who were present went to the rostrum in turn to receive the degree certificate and to enjoy the tassel turning ceremony from leaders of Tianjin University and representatives of the degree committees.
