On July 16, the 9th Tianjin University Internal Combustion Engine International Summer School opened at Tianjin University.

Seventy graduate students and young teachers from over ten universities including Tianjin University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Jilin University, Fuzhou University, Shandong University of Technology, Wuhan University of Technology, and Taiyuan University of Technology and more than thirty engineers from more than ten enterprises，such as BAIC Motor Corporation, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Group Corporation and Anhui Hualing Automobile Corporation participated. Professor Zhang Lixin, Assistant to the President of Tianjin University and Professor Wang Tianyou, Dean of the School of Mechanical Engineering, spoke at the opening ceremony. Professor Haiqiao Wei, Director of the Department of Energy and Power Engineering hosted the opening ceremony.

Zhang Lixin hoped that everyone would better understand Tianjin University through the International Summer School. Wang Tianyou encouraged further understanding of the internal combustion engine science and technology frontiers through the International Summer School and expand their horizons.

The International Summer School invited a number of internationally famous experts on internal combustion engines, including Professor Ulrich Spicher of the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, Professor Victor Wong of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, Professor Keiya Nishida of the University of Hiroshima, Japan and Dr. Mehdi Jangi of the University of Birmingham, UK. The course was taught in English for 8 days, including lectures on the combustion of gasoline engines, the combustion of diesel engines, emissions from internal combustion engines, aftertreatment and numerical simulation of turbulent combustion. During the teaching period, young teachers took the initiative to participate in the course, and the students interacted actively with the Professors. In addition, eight senior Professors from Tianjin University were invited to give an academic report every afternoon on the latest research progress of the School of Energy and Power Engineering. At the end of the course, a certificate of graduation was issued to the students.

The International Summer School class on internal combustion engines has been held on nine successive sessions since 2009, with the support of the National Key Laboratory of Engines, Tianjin University. The aim of this class is to learn the teaching ideas of famous professors from world-class universities, expand the international vision, improve the teaching level and promote the internationalization of this subject and its teaching.

The course is taught in English and free of charge to all walks of life. More than 500 class hours has been accumulated and more than 1400 people have participated in the course. It provides a valuable opportunity for graduate students, young teachers and engineering and technical personnel of domestic universities, scientific research institutes and enterprises to communicate with internationally renowned Professors and have an important influence on the discipline and industry.
