On September 7, 2018, Tianjin University held the welcoming ceremony for newly admitted undergraduates and vocational students at Qiushi Hall on Peiyangyuan Campus and New Stadium on Weijin Road Campus at the same time. The Tianjin University campus in early autumn woke beautifully and pleasantly and welcomed the first year students as they were moving in: the sky was clear, the trees green, the grass swirling in the light breeze and the lakes sparkling. On this glorious day, the ceremony was hosted by the Vice President Wang Shuxin, together with more than 5000 TJU administration leaders, faculty members, first year students and their families. 

President Zhong Denghua spoke at the ceremony. 

President Zhong Denghua gave a speech, on the theme:“The Greatness of Tianjin University”. He shared his thinking on Tianjin University and the great opportunity for learning with the young students and advised them to cherish this precious time. He inspired young students to understand Tianjin University as well as the essence of great vision, making a difference, and great character and be an innovation-minded Tianjin University student with a deep love for the homeland and having a global vision and practical ability. President Zhong stated that “The greatness of Tianjin University” lies in its ”thinking big”, “making a difference”, and “great character”. He hoped that in the next few years, the new students could lay down a solid foundation using the talent training model of cutting through the entire education process between undergraduate, master and doctoral education, enhance their ability in the general education curriculum, develop an interest and physical fitness in campus cultural activities, exercise and sports, establish a lofty ideal, adhere to the TJU great character and create a better tomorrow. 

Jia Shaoyi spoke on behalf of the faculty. 

Professor Jia Shaoyi, from the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, spoke on behalf of the teachers. He said that every course and every practice in the university is a fertile ground for knowledge. Students should study diligently, because God rewards the diligent and diligence is the means by which one makes up for one's dullness. Practice makes perfect, students should learn to master learning skills, achieve twice the result with half the effort. He hoped that students pay attention to the cultivation of personal professional accomplishment, humanistic accomplishment, innovation ability, entrepreneurial ability and lifelong learning ability. Only when they are fully developed can they achieve the greatest gains. 

Zhang Yidan spoke as the representative of senior graduate students 

Zhang Yidan, an undergraduate student from the School of Electrical and Information Engineering, spoke on behalf of students at the University. After three years of study, Zhang Yidan, one of TJU’s top ten outstanding young students, has won nearly 40 national, municipal and school-level honors, and won many national prizes and scholarships. Based on her own experience, she said that learning will always be the main theme of Tianjin University. Newly admitted students should correct their attitudes, seize opportunities, and strive to solve practical problems in national development with their own knowledge. 

Ding Chao delivered a speech on behalf of the newcomers. 

Ding Chao from the humanities experimental class spoke as a first year representative. In his speech, he said that as the new generation of the new age, taking on the mission of a new generation of TJU students, a freshman must be a person who has faith, is willing to study, and has love for our country, and is willing to make his or her own contribution to achieve the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

There was a special ending of the welcoming ceremony: University badge presentation. University leaders helped the first year representatives to put on the badge, which symbolizes the hopes, anticipation, heritage and a new beginning for the class of 2018. The ceremony came to a close with the sound of the university anthem sung by all the teachers and students. The new students have opened a new chapter in Tianjin University, and they also have opened a new chapter in their lives. With melodious voices, the 2018 freshmen of Tianjin University are entrusted with the beautiful blessing of “ascend to another level to gain insight, be introspective and to look to the future”.
