September 5 was the first day for 2018 new students to register at Tianjin University. On September 5 and 6, Tianjin University enrolled over 12,000 undergraduates, postgraduates and doctoral students. A large number of students born in the 00s entered the campus this year. Among the undergraduate first years who enrolled in Tianjin University this year, there were more than 3,700 people born in the 00s, the youngest being born in 2003. The students born in 2000 have become the biggest force of this year’s fresh faced new-comers. 

At Tianjin University’s Tailei Square, a huge message wall was particularly noticeable. New students wrote their intuitive first impressions of Tianjin University— “Here I come”, “Grateful for the chance of coming to TJU” and “The campus is really beautiful”. 

In order to help new students to blend in better and faster, colleges and schools of TJU carefully prepared unique activities to welcome new students. The School of Education prepared a “Time Capsule” for them to write down their expectations for the future and plans for their college life and put them into it. After four years, the school will return the records to the students so as to encourage them to stay true to their original aspiration, be introspective and plan for the future. The School of Foreign Languages and Literature designed a “Wen” (a Chinese character) composed of 40 small QR Codes for new students to scan to see a list of books carefully recommended by elder students. The School of Materials Science and Engineering prepared a board printed with student ID cards for the new students to take pictures, one after another to record their first images of TJU. The College of Intelligence and Computing recorded precious moments for its new students in the form of a group photo posted on WeChat Moments. The new students said: “We did not expect that our university would have prepared so many varied activities for us. We can feel that our seniors are very enthusiastic and that our school is very warm and welcoming.” 

The first batch of students of Intelligent Medical Engineering arrived at TJU to enroll. This group of "post-00s" freshmen consisted of 30 students from 17 provinces and cities in China who will receive joint training from Tianjin University and Tianjin Medical University, study advanced artificial intelligence and engineering technologies in related fields, such as brain cognition, big data, cloud computing, machine learning and so on, and study human-computer collaborative intelligent diagnosis and treatment and emerging areas of clinical applications. 

In order to ensure that every financially strapped student can be educated at the university without worry, Tianjin University continued to open up a "green passage" this year, setting up a financial aid system including deferred payment of tuition fees, student loans, temporary financial subsidies and other policies to prevent any student from dropping out of school because of family financial difficulties. 

A large number of volunteers welcoming new students were very active in every corner of the campus: a vanguard volunteer team of 24 outstanding postgraduate communist members kept guiding the way and carrying luggage for new students and their parents; some volunteers explained professional knowledge to new students and parents at the welcoming place; some TJU schools offered free tissues, peppermints, paper cups and other items at the welcoming site to offer facilities to the new students and their parents in the scorching sun; there were also volunteers taking pictures for new students and parents for free. “The university has offered a lot of help and facilities to the new students, helping us to have a better understanding of our children's future life so that we are more reassured”, a parent of a new student of the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology said.
